The Arizona Cardinals will head to DC to take on the Washington Redskins this Sunday from FedEx Field on FOX.

Arizona Cardinals Preview

Arizona went 4-13 last season, and finished last in the NFC West. The Cardinals regressed in a big way last season, and that led to a change at the head coaching position. Arizona scored 20.2 points per game last season, while allowing 26.4 ppg.

Cardinals Player Notes

• A late-season injury to franchise quarterback Kyler Murray will hover over the Cardinals this year, and Joshua Dobbs will make the Week 1 start. The former Tennessee Vols quarterback made a pair of starts for the Titans in 2022, and he totaled 411 passing yards with two touchdowns to two interceptions.

James Conner returns after having another solid season that saw him gain 782 rushing yards, 300 receiving yards, and eight total touchdowns (7 rush, 1 rec)

•The wideout room will look very different without DeAndre Hopkins and AJ Green, and with Hollywood Brown set to miss this contest, Greg Dortch and Rondale Moore are slotted into bigger roles.

• Moore had his season cut short by injury, but the former Purdue wideout caught 41 passes for 414 receiving yards thru eight games. Dortch enjoyed a breakout season and posted splits of 52/467/2.

Washington Commanders Preview

Washington went 8-8-1 last season, and finished fourth in the NFC East. The Commanders made the switch at quarterback too late last season, and they'll attempt to make the playoffs for the second time under Ron Rivera. Washington scored 18.9 points per game last season, while allowing 20.2 ppg.

Commanders Player Notes

Sam Howell will enter his first season as the QB1 for Washington. The former UNC quarterback flashed in one appearance last season, passing for 169 yards with a touchdown and interception, while rushing for 35 yards and a score.

Brian Robinson and Antonio Gibson will head the backfield. Robinson overcame adversity and rushed for 797 yards and two scores thru twelve games during his rookie season. Gibson took a small backseat role after passing the 1,000-yard mark in 2021, but he still contributed well with 546 rushing yards, 46 catches for 353 receiving yards, and five total touchdowns (3 rush, 2 rec)

Terry McLaurin is cleared for the season opener and will lead the wideout room again here 2023. McLaurin surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for the third straight season, while catching 77 passes and scoring five times

Jahan Dotson and Curtis Samuel join McLaurin to give Washington a very good wideout trio. Dotson caught 35 passes for 523 yards and seven scores thru twelve games, while Samuel enjoyed a bounce back season with 64 receptions and 843 total yards (656 rec, 187 rush)

Corey’s Free Pick

Washington couldn’t ask for a better Week 1 matchup, as they’ll get to face a Josh Dobbs-led Arizona team on their home turf. The Commanders come into this one with a first-time starter themselves, but they return a formidable front seven, and should be able to control this contest in Arlington. The Cardinals offense is unproven beyond James Conner, and there are a pair of angles to take for this Week 1 bout. The Under will be in play due to both teams pending first game struggles, but I like Washington handling business here at home in front of their home crowd. Back the Commanders this Sunday in DC.
