The Green Bay Packers will host the New England Patriots for a preseason matchup this weekend from Lambeau Field.

Patriots Preseason Preview

New England opened the preseason with a 20-9 loss to Houston in Foxboro. The Patriots struggled to contain former starting quarterbacks Case Keenum and Davis Mills, and they’ll look for improvement here at Lambeau. Bailey Zappe and Malik Cunningham will likely receive most of the snaps under center again. Zappe came out accurate, going 12-14 for 79 yards, but there’s a chance his QB2 role could be up for grabs, as Bill O’Brien toyed with Cunningham’s dual threat ability. The former Louisville QB led the team in rushing and scored the Pats lone touchdown on the ground, and he’ll attempt to gain more ground on Zappe here.

There’s a chance we see new signing Ezekiel Elliot in this contest, but Cunningham and Pierre Strong Jr. will likely handle the majority of the backfield work again, with the latter gaining 33 yards on nine touches last week. Tyquan Thornton and LSU rookie Kayshon Boutte are battling it out for a depth role in the wideout room, with the former leading the team with 31 receiving yards in last week’s loss. The Patriot defense allowed three touchdown drives which featured a two minute-drill and two lengthy quarter opening possessions.

Packers Preseason Preview

Green Bay picked up a three-score win over Cincinnati in their preseason opener, 36-19. The Packers put together a strong two-way effort, holding the Bengals to three points in the second half, while scoring a touchdown in each quarter. New starter Jordan Love looked good in his debut, going 7/10 and tossing a touchdown in one possession. Rookie fifth round pick Sean Clifford was solid in his first taste of NFL action, passing for 208 yards with a touchdown to a pair of interceptions.

The RB3 role is up for grabs, and UDFA Emanuel Wilson made his presence felt with an 80-yard touchdown run in the win over Cincy. Wilson scored a second time, while gaining 111 rushing yards, and he’s got a good chance to land the position. The Packers wideout room outside of Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs is wide open, with second-year receiver Samori Toure (3 rec, 56 yards) and UVA product Dontayvion Wicks (3/68) names to watch for the slot position.

Corey’s Free Pick

New England should come out a bit sharper defensively after letting Houston have their way through the air, but I like Green Bay’s chances of winning this game at home. The Packers looked great on both sides of the ball on the road in Cincy last week, and they should be able to bring some of that momentum back to Lambeau this weekend. The Under may be in play due to New England’s pedestrian offense, but let’s back the Pack at home for this preseason matchup.

The pick in this article is the opinion of the writer, not a PickDawgz site consensus.
