The Denver Broncos will play the Arizona Cardinals in the first week of the NFL Preseason on Friday night at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. Both of these teams had really poor seasons in 2022 and will look to start this year with a victory. Let’s take a look at the matchup and find a winner.
Broncos Preview
The Denver Broncos finished last season with a record of 5-12 and finished in fourth place of the AFC West standings. Denver started the season with a 2-1 record, but it was all down hill from there. The Broncos finished last in the NFL in points scored per game, but they were 14th in points allowed. If there was a bright spot with the offense, it was scoring 24.2 points per game in their last five games of the year. The most important move that was made in the offseason by Denver was the addition of Sean Payton as head coach. Payton needs to figure out how to get more out of Russell Wilson, who had a very disappointing season in 2022. In this game, we will see the starters play for Denver, but I doubt it will be for more than a couple of series. Once Wilson exits, we will see Jarrett Stidham and Ben DiNucci under center for the Broncos.
Cardinals Preview
The Arizona Cardinals finished 2022 with a record of 4-13 and also finished fourth in their division. The Cardinals started the season fairly competitive and were 2-2 through four games, but finished the rest of the season with a 2-11 record. Arizona had a below average offensive attack last year, but their defense was one of the worst in the NFL. Kyle Murray comes into this season still recovering from an injury, so he will not be available for this game. The Cardinals will turn to Colt McCoy, Clayton Tune, and David Blough in this one. I am very interested to see how the Arizona defense looks, as they cannot play even remotely close to how they did last year if they want to find success.
Pick
Both of these teams should show some intensity to start the preseason, as they look to put last year’s miseries behind them. Both teams also have new head coaches, so most players will be looking to make a good first impression. I do think the Denver offense will find success early with their starters, as they face a defense that was horrible last year. On the other side, it will be exciting to see the quarterback competition with Murray expected to be out for at least a few weeks. I think we are going to see some points scored in this one and I am taking the over in this matchup.
