The Minnesota Vikings will play the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1 of the NFL Preseason on Thursday night at Lumen Field in Seattle, Washington. It may only be the Preseason, but let’s take a look at the matchup and find a winner.
Vikings Preview
The Minnesota Vikings come into the 2023 season after having a fantastic season in 2022, but they did have a disappointing loss to the Giants in the playoffs. A lot of people are saying the Vikings were extremely lucky to finish with such a solid record, after they went 11-0 in games decided by 8 points or less in the regular season. Minnesota actually finished the season allowing more points than they scored, which is almost impossible to do with a 13-4 record. The Vikings will still have Kirk Cousins at quarterback, but he shouldn’t get any playing time in this game. One of the biggest losses for this Vikings team is Dalvin Cook, who will be replaced by Alexander Mattison. We probably won’t see too many starters in this game and Nick Mullens is the likely candidate to get the start at quarterback.
Seahawks Preview
The Seattle Seahawks finished last season with a record of 9-8, but lost by a score of 41-23 to the 49ers in the first round of the playoffs. The Seahawks had an interesting season, as they started 6-3, but went 3-5 down the stretch and nearly missed out on the playoffs. Seattle had a very solid offensive attack for most of the season, as they finished 9th in points scored. On the other side, the Seahawks defense allowed over 23 points per game, which was 25th in the NFL. Geno Smith will be back under center for Seattle this year, but is not expected to play in this game. The Seahawks will go with Drew Lock and Holton Ahlers at quarterback in this game. Seattle was able to get some solid playmakers in the draft, so it will be exciting to watch who can make an immediate impact here.
Pick
It is never easy to find a winner in the preseason, let alone in the first week, but I think we are going to see some points scored here. Both defenses had some issues last year and while we won’t see many starters on either side of the ball, we should see some good competition for the backup quarterback spot for each team. Tackling is usually an issue in the preseason as well, as teams don’t do a ton of full contact before the first game. I am going to ride with the over in this game.
