The Washington Commanders and Chicago Bears face off on Thursday Night to kick off Week 6 of the NFL season at Solider Field. When these two teams faced off in 2019 it was the Bears that secured the 31-15 victory.
Coming into the season, there were a lot of expectations surrounding this Washington team, but they have mostly been a disappointment. They currently sit with a 1-4 record overall and the only win came in the first game of the season against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Over the last three games, Washington has scored only 35 points total, and they need more offensive production in this game. In the last game against the Tennessee Titans, the Commanders completed 25 of his 38 passes for 359 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. The running game wasn’t good enough in the last game and will need to be improved upon here. Overall this season, Washington is averaging 18 points while their defense is giving up 25.6 points per game. Tight end Logan Thomas is dealing with a calf injury, and it’s unclear if he’s going to be able to go in this game.
On the other side of this matchup is the Bears, who sit with a 2-3 record overall, and they are coming off a loss in their last game. In the last game against the Minnesota Vikings, they were down 21-10 at halftime, and they were defeated 29-22. Justin Fields completed 15 of his 21 passes for 208 yards and a touchdown. Fields hasn’t thrown it a ton this season, but they need him to make the passes here. The Bears are averaging 17.2 points, while their defense is giving up 21.2 points per game. Linebacker Matthew Adams is dealing with a calf injury, and it’s unclear if he will be able to go in this game.
Washington is 1-3-1 against the spread in their last five road games. The Bears are 5-11-1 against the spread in their last 17 games overall. The over is 4-0 in the last four meetings played between the two teams.
I didn’t think I would be saying this heading into the season, but I trust Fields more than I trust Wentz. The turnovers and stupid decisions are still a problem with Wentz, and that is going to let them down here. Look for the Commanders' offense to struggle to score again, much like they did the last three games. The Bears are going to find enough success scoring here to cover the spread.
