The Los Angeles Chargers and Houston Texans face off on Sunday in a Week 4 NFL showdown at NRG Stadium. When these two teams faced off in 2021 it was Houston that secured the 41-29 victory.
The Chargers come into this game with a 1-2 record overall and for a team that has so many expectations this season, it has been a disappointing start. In the last game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Chargers defense gave up 38 points and that led to the 28-point defeat. Justin Herbert did play through the rib injuries but he didn’t look the same. He completed 25 of his 45 passes for 291 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The Chargers are averaging 19.3 points while their defense is giving up 28 points per game. Keenan Allen is still dealing with a hamstring injury and he won’t be able to go in this game.
On the other side of this matchup is the Texans who sit with an 0-2-1 record overall but they have been competitive in each of the last three games. In the last game against the Chicago Bears, the Texans scored 20 points, but the defense gave up 23 points, and that led to the defeat. Davis Mills in the last game completed 20 of his 32 passes for 245 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Dameon Pierece finished the game with 20 carries for 80 yards and a touchdown. The Texans are averaging 16.3 points while their defense is giving up 19.7 points per game.
The Texans are 5-0 against the spread in their last five games against the AFC. The over is 6-2 in the Chargers last eight games against AFC. The under is 7-3 in the Texans last ten games against the AFC. The Texans are 5-0 against the spread in their last five games against AFC.
I think the Chargers should be allowing Herbert to heal up for a few weeks before continuing to play, but they have a different idea. I don’t trust Herbert to find a whole lot of success here, and the Texans have been competitive this season. Davis Mills threw for 245 yards and one touchdown in the last game, and he will throw at least that here. The Texans might not do enough to win the game, but they will cover this spread.
