The Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions face off on Sunday in a Week 1 NFL showdown at Ford Field.
The Eagles shocked a lot of people with their good play last season, and now they have been aggressive during the offseason to try and become a Super Bowl contender. On offense the Eagles added AJ Brown who gives Hurts a true number one. The Eagles offensive line is also strong and should be a strength in this game. On defense, the Eagles also got better and that starts up front. The Eagles took Jordan Davis with their first-round pick. They also added James Bradburry who is really going to help the secondary.
On the other side of this matchup is the Lions who enter their second year with coach Matt Campbell and they hope to be a playoff contender. Last season the Lions finished with a 3-13-1 record. The Lions weren’t super busy during the offseason but they did give Jared Goff another weapon by bringing in DJ Chark. Cornerback Mike Hughes was also brought in on a one-year deal to help the secondary. The Lions are a bit banged up heading into this game, and there is some concern about if center Frank Ragnow is going to be able to go in this game.
Philadelphia is 1-3-1 against the spread in their last five games overall. Detroit is 4-0 against the spread in their last four home games. The over is 8-0 in the last eight meetings between the two teams, The Eagles are 2-5 against the spread in their last seven meetings against the Lions. The over is 7-3 in the Eagles last ten games as a favorite.
I’m not as high as others on the Eagles, and this is a game I actually think the Lions could win. I expect the Lions offense to be better in this game, and Jared Goff to find plenty of success through the air. Hurts also is inconsistent, and this is one of those games where he is going to struggle. The Lions are going to score enough to cover the spread.
