The New England Patriots and Las Vegas Raiders face off on Friday in an NFL preseason game at Allegiant Stadium. When these two teams faced off in September of 2020 it was the Patriots that secured the 36-20.
The Las Vegas Raiders haven’t played Derek Carr yet this preseason, but they have still found a ton of success. The Raiders are one of two teams to play three preseason games and they have won all three games. Against the Jacksonville Jaguars they won 27-11, against the Minnesota Vikings they won 26-20, and in the last game against the Miami Dolphins, they won 15-13. In the last game against the Dolphins Jarrett Stidham, Chase Garbers, and Nick Mullens all took snaps under center. Mullens has since been traded to the Vikings, but I would expect to see Stidham and Garbers in this game. Stidham completed 7 of his 10 passes for 80 yards. Britain Brown had nine rushes for 70 yards.
On the other side of this matchup is the Patriots who have gone 1-1 so far during the preseason. In the first game against the San Francisco Giants they lost 23-21 and in the last game against the Carolina Panthers they won 20-10. In the last game against the Panthers, Mac Jones completed 4 of his 8 passes for 61 yards. Bailey Zappe had the most playing time and completed 16 of his 25 passes for 173 yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception. Lil’Jordan Humphrey has also made a strong case for making the roster catching 5 passes for 71 yards.
The Patriots are 1-4 against the spread in their last five games. The Raiders are 2-5 against the spread in their last seven games on grass. The road team is 4-1 against the spread in the last five meetings. The Patriots are 5-1 against the spread in the last six meetings.
The Raiders have had good quarterback playing heading into this game, and I expect that will continue here. Two games ago the Raiders scored 26 points and I expect their offense is going to find success again here. The Raiders gave up only 13 points in the last game, and they will defend enough here to cover the spread.
