The Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons face off on Sunday in a Week 8 NFL showdown at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. When these two teams faced off last in 2020 it was the Falcons that won 25-17. The Falcons have won six of the last seven games against Carolina. 

The Falcons sit with a 3-3 record overall, but they have won two games in a row. In the last game against the Miami Dolphins they had to hold on late, but it was enough to come away with the two point victory. The Falcons are averaging 22.5 points while the defense is giving up 29.3 points. Even in the last game against the Dolphins that they won, they gave up 28 points. Matt Ryan is having another big season throwing for 1,668 yards, 12 touchdowns, and four interceptions. Rookie tight end Kyle Pitts is having quite the season too sitting with 471 yards and a touchdown. 

On the other side of this matchup is the Carolina Panthers who got out to a fast start to the season, but have now lost four games in a row. In the last game against the New York Giants they lost 25-3. The Panthers are averaging 20.86 points per game while the defense is giving up 20.86 points per game. One big issue for this Panthers team has been the play of Sam Darnold, and he could be on a short leash in this game. In the last game he completed 16 of his 25 passes for 112 yards and an interception.

The Panthers are 0-4 against the spread in their last four games overall. The Falcons are 10-3 against the spread in their last 13 games against teams with a losing record. Carolina is 1-6 against the spread in their last seven meetings against Atlanta. The road team is 4-1 against the spread in the last five meetings. 

Matt Ryan has been playing well as of late, while Sam Darnold has really struggled. Even against a terrible Falcons defense, I expect Darnold is going to struggle to move the ball, and that will be the difference in this game. Back the Falcons to win this game and cover the spread.
