The San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals face off on Sunday in a Week 5 NFL showdown at the University of Phoenix Stadium. The last time these two teams faced off was in December of 2020 and the 49ers won 20-12.

The 49ers currently sit with a 2-2 record overall but the two losses have come in their last two games. Two games ago against the Green Bay Packers they lost 30-28 and in the last game against the Seattle Seahawks, they lost 28-21. Jimmy Garappolo was hurt in the last game and it’s unclear if he will be able to go in this game. It seems signs are pointing towards him going, but if he can’t, it will be Trey Lance who steps in. In the last game against the Seahawks, Lance completed 9 of his 18 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns. The top running back was Trey Sermon who had 19 carries for 89 yards.

On the other side of this matchup is the Cardinals who have a perfect record, and they have looked pretty dominant this year. In the last game against the Los Angeles Rams, the offense had another big game putting up 37 points. The Cardinals offense is averaging 35 points per game which is the best in the NFL. The defense is giving up 21.2 points which is 9th in the NFL. Under center for the Cardinals is Kyler Murray and he has thrown for 1,273 yards, nine touchdowns, and four interceptions. He has also rushed for 109 yards and three touchdowns. In the backfield, Chase Edmonds and James Conner have been a 1-2 punch, and both will be important in this game.

The 49ers are 4-9 against the spread in their last 13 games. The Cardinals are 2-7 against the spread in their last nine games overall. The underdog is 5-0-1 in the last six meetings in Arizona. The under is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Arizona.

The Cardinals are the better team, and even though this has been a series that has been dominated by the underdog, I don’t think the 49ers are going to find success in this game. I expect another big from Murray, and the Cardinals are going to win this game by at least seven points. Back Arizona to win this game and cover the spread.
