The Los Angeles Chargers will travel to FedExField to take on the Washington Football Team this Sunday afternoon in NFL Football action.

The Los Angeles Chargers are coming off a disappointing 7-9 season, however, there is plenty of room for optimism for the Chargers this season as they finished the 2020 season on a 4-game winning streak and have one of the more promising young QB’s in the NFL in Justin Herbert. Offensively, Los Angeles ranked t-18th in scoring at 24.0 ppg and 10th in total offensive at 382.1 yds/g game. The Chargers were led by their passing attacked that ranked 6th in passing offense at 270.6 passing yds/g and hope to improve a rushing attack that ranked 18th in NFL at 111.5 rushing yds/g. The Chargers will be led this season by QB Justin Herbert who finished last season completing 66.6% of his passes for 4336 yards, 31 TD, & 10 INT. The top receiving threats for Herbert and the Chargers will be Keenan Allen (100 rec, 992 yards, 8 TD), Mike Williams (48 rec, 756 yards, 5 TD), & Jalen Guyton (28 rec, 511 yards, 3 TD). Leading the in the Chargers backfield will be the dual-threat Austin Ekeler who had 530 rushing yards & 1 TD while also hauling in 403 receiving yards & 2 TD’s on 54 receptions.

Defensively, Los Angeles Chargers will hope to improve a defense that ranked 23rd in points allowed last season at 26.6 ppg on 343.4 total yards per game (223.6 passing yds/g; 119.8 rushing yds/g). Leading the way for the Chargers defense will be Derwin James Jr and Joey Bosa.

The Washington Football team finished last season with just an overall record of 7-9, however, it was a somewhat successful season for first-year coach Ron Rivera as Washington won 5 of their last 7 games to make the NFL Playoffs and gave Tampa Bay all they could handle before getting defeated by a 31-23 margin. Washington comes into this season in hopes to improve an offense that ranked just t-25th in scoring offense at 20.9 ppg last season on 317.3 total yards per game. Both the rushing and passing attacks struggled as Washington ranked just 25th in passing offensive (216.6 passing yds/g) and 26th in rushing offensive (100.7 rushing yds/g). Offensively, Washington will be led by journeyman QB, Ryan Fitzpatrick, who completed 68.5% of his passes last season for 2091 yards, 13 TD, & 8 INT with the Dolphins last season. Washington and Fitzpatrick should have plenty of weapons at the receivers position, led by Terry McLaurin (87 rec, 1118 yards, 4 TD), TE Logan Thomas (72 rec, 670 yards, 6 TD), free agent signing Curtis Samuel, & 3rd round pick Dyami Brown. Leading the way for the Washington backfield will be Antonio Gibson who had 795 rushing yards & 11 TD’s on 170 carries while also bring in 247 receiving yards.

Defensively, Washington was outstanding last season as they finished the season ranked 4th in scoring defense at 20.6 ppg on 304.6 total yards per game (191.8 passing yds/g; 112.8 rushing yds/g). Leading the way for the Washington defense is Chase Young & Montez Sweat.

The Chargers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall and 15-7-2 ATS in their last 24 road games. Washington is 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall and 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games as a home underdog.

The Los Angeles Chargers should be a solid football team this season, however, I think this is just a bad matchup for them. Washington has arguably the best defense in the NFL and their strength comes against opposing passing attacks as they ranked 2nd last season in passing yards allowed while also having great DE’s that should be able to put plenty of pressure of Justin Herbert. Washington’s offense has some playmakers and as I think Ryan Fitzpatrick will be able to find some success against the Los Angeles defense, I think the play here is to take Washington to cover this small spread. Good Luck!
