The Cincinnati Bengals will travel to FedExField to take on the Washington Football Team this Friday night in NFL Preseason action.
The Cincinnati Bengals opened their preseason last week with an impressive 19-14 victory against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week. Cincinnati didn’t have Joe Borrow, who although has been cleared to play didn’t dress for this matchup, however, the offense did a decent job of moving the ball and ended up outgaining Tampa Bay by a 303-159 margin. Cincinnati had solid QB play by both their QB’s, Brandon Allen (7 for 10, 77 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT) & Kyle Shurmur (12 for 19, 108 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT). The top receivers for the Buccaneers were Trenton Irwin (3 rec, 35 yards), Chris Evans (4 rec, 33 yards), & Mike Thomas (2 rec, 32 yards). Leading the way for the Bengals backfield was Jacques Patrick who had 71 rushing yards on 15 carries.
Defensively, Cincinnati was outstanding against Tampa Bay and was led by Joseph Ossai (3 tackles, 1 sack) & Darius Hodge (3 tackles, 1.5 sacks). Cincinnati held Tampa Bay to just 14 first downs and forced 4 turnovers in the victory.
The Washington Football team will look to bounce back after suffering a 22-13 lost in the preseason opener against the New England Patriots. Washington was able to outgain New England by a 367-320 margin and dominated the offensive time of possession, however, Washington had trouble putting points on the scoreboard and allowed the Patriots to pull away late on a 91-yard TD run by Rhamondre Stevenson. Ryan Fitzpatrick (5 for 8, 58 yards) started the game for Washington while both Taylor Heinicke (9 for 15, 86 yards) & Steven Montez (17 of 24, 108 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) both played well in relief. Jaret Patterson (10 car, 40 yards; 4 rec, 30 yards) led Washington in both rushing & receiving yards. The other top targets in the receiving game were Terry McLaurin (2 rec, 25 yards), Sammis Reyes (2 rec, 25 yards), Logan Thomas (1 rec, 24 yards), & Jonathan Williams (4 rec, 22 yards).
Defensively, Washington was led by a Justin Phillips (5 tackles) & Bunmi Rotimi (3 tackles, 0.5 sacks), however, Washington struggled a bit against the run allowing the Patriots to average 7.2 yds/carry and didn’t force a New England turnover in the loss.
The Bengals are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games on grass. Washington is 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games overall, however, just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games as a home favorite.
We know that Joe Burrow is not going be in action in this one, however, early reports are that we will see a bit more of the other regular Cincinnati starters, including RB Joe Mixon & rookie WR Ja’Marr Chase. Washington seems that they will most likely roll with a similar game plan as of last week with a few series with their starters.
Cincinnati was impressive on the defensive side of the ball last week and as I think we see another solid effort in this one from the Bengals, I think the play here is to take Cincinnati and the points while putting something on the under. Good Luck!
