The Los Angeles Chargers and Los Angeles Rams face off Saturday in a preseason NFL showdown at SoFi Stadium.
The Los Angeles Chargers made some changes this offseason bringing in Brandon Staley to be in charge as head coach. Staley is a defense first coach, so the hope is this defense should be very improved. The Chargers look to have their quarterback position all squared away with Justin Herbert as the starter, after an impressive rookie year. Chase Daniel, Easton Stick and KJ Costello are all battling for a backup spot. On defense, the Chargers are switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4. If the Chargers want to find success this season, it’s going to need to be the defense that finds success.
On the other side of this matchup is the Los Angeles Rams who changed starting quarterbacks this offseason. The Rams traded away Jared Goff and in return got Matthew Stafford, who they hope can put them over the hump. The wide receivers crew for the Rams is strong and includes Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods, and Desean Jackson. On defense, the Rams have made some changes, but this looks to be a talented crew. One key player to look at on the defense is Ernest Jones who is a rookie but could play a big role on that side of the ball.
The Chargers are 4-0 against the spread in their last four games overall. The Chargers are 15-7-2 against the spread in their last 24 road games. The over is 6-1 in the Chargers last seven road games. The under is 14-3 in the Rams last 17 home games. The under is 11-4 in the Rams last 15 games overall. The over is 5-1 in the last six meetings played between the Chargers and Rams. The Rams are 0-7-1 against the spread in their last 8 games as a home underdog.
I expect both offenses are going to struggle in this game and that is going to lead to this game staying well under the total. I don’t love a side in this game, but the under is going to cash with ease.
