The Carolina Panthers were a mess in 2019, winning only 5 games and dealing with coaching and quarterback issues the entire season. With QB Cam Newton gone, and Head Coach Matt Rhule hired, the Panthers will look to rebound in 2020, but that does not seem likely. Get NFL Predictions and Picks for Every NFL game at Pick Dawgz.
Offense: With Cam Newton and Kyle Allen out, Teddy Bridgewater in, the entire Panthers offense should look and play a little different. Bridgewater played well for the Saints when he had to fill in for the injured Drew Brees, but can he be a starting quarterback in the NFL again? I think so. Bridgewater had a devastating injury with the Vikings, which almost ended his career. I cannot see Bridgewater letting this opportunity go to waste, so I expect him to have a great season with Christian McCaffery, or "Run CMC" leading the backfield and receiving game. The signing of WR Robby Anderson is an intriguing one, as this team definitely could use the extra weapon. The Panthers will be without one of the Panthers all-time greats, TE Greg Olsen, as the two sides have mutually agreed to part ways, and Olsen has signed with the Seahawks. Overall, this offense should be fine, as Christian McCaffery is the best running back in the league by far.
Defense: The Panthers defense is where it gets scary, as this team was already ranked 31st in the league in total defense, and the loss of Saftey Eric Reid certainly does not help. The Panthers' defense right now is not good enough to compete, plain and simple. Carolina will most likely address needs in the secondary in the draft, but that will not be enough to make this defense competitive, yet. Let's not forget, all-time great linebacker Luke Kuechly, announced his retirement at the end of the 2019 season, so that will be another huge hole that the Panthers will have to find a way to fill.
Overview: Overall, this Panthers team looks solid on offense and bad on defense. In the NFL, defense takes precedent many times, especially when the offense is not dynamic by any means. Sure, Christian McCaffery is fantastic, and Teddy Bridgewater should have success in Carolina, but this offense is not even in the top ten, in my opinion, therefore it will not be able to carry the team. I think the Panthers win 5 games again this season, as the NFC South looks extremely tough in 2020.
