The Cleveland Cavaliers are now under serious pressure as they are now trailing by 2-0 in the series after getting smashed by the Knicks in an ugly 109-93 loss in Game 2 on Thursday night. Donovan Mitchell led the team with 26 points on eight of 18 shooting, James Harden added 18 points, Evan Mobley added 14 points while Jarrett Allen chipped in with 13 points and 10 rebounds. As a team, the Cavaliers shot just 39 percent from the field and nine of 35 from the 3-point line as they got off to a solid start and kept pace with the Knicks in a close contest until the third quarter where they fell victim to a ferocious 18-0 run that crushed their hopes in an instant. The Cavaliers just didn’t get nearly enough support from their reserves as Max Strus scored just five points on one of seven shooting, while Sam Merrill scored just four points on one of eight shooting off the bench.

Meanwhile, the New York Knicks are now brimming with confidence as they now hold a 2-0 series lead after blowing past the Cavaliers in a comfortable win in Game 2 on Thursday. Josh Hart led the team with 26 points and seven assists on 10 of 21 shooting, Mikal Bridges and Jalen Brunson each scored 19 points while Karl-Anthony Towns tallied 18 points with 13 rebounds. As a team, the Knicks shot 52 percent from the field and 13 of 36 from the 3-point line as they held the Cavaliers in check in the second quarter to take the early lead, but this was still a close game that could’ve gone either way until the third quarter where the Knicks took full control of the game with an 18-0 run to set up the comfortable win in front of a raucous home crowd. The Knicks only got 13 points from their reserve players, but all five starters finished in double figures in scoring.

The Cavaliers will be kicking themselves as they got off to a solid start in Game 2 thanks to the hot hand of Evan Mobley who had 14 points in the first half, but they went away from what was working and it cost them big in the end. The Knicks were terrific on the defensive end again and they got a big 26 points from Josh Hart who is more known for his intangibles rather than his scoring. Now the pressure is completely on the Cavaliers to respond to avoid falling into a 3-0 series deficit but they will take some confidence from the fact that they were able to come back from a 2-0 series deficit against the Pistons in the previous round. Surely the Cavaliers will look at the tape and go back to an inside-out game with Mobley getting plenty of touches in the paint, but the Knicks have been so impressive on the defensive end and they’ve yet to really explode on offense in this series. The Knicks are certainly tempting as the underdogs in this spot, but the Cavaliers are capable of much better and I think they finally get some success with a narrow win and cover at home in this spot.
