The Utah Jazz have been ice-cold to start the season as they’ve lost seven of their first eight games and they are now on a six-game losing streak after getting beaten by the Pelicans in a 120-113 overtime road defeat on Wednesday. Keyonte George led the team with 39 points, nine assists and four steals, Lauri Markkanen added 21 points with 10 rebounds and four assists while Ace Bailey chipped in with 15 points. As a team, the Jazz shot 44 percent from the field and 11 of 47 from the 3-point line as they exploded for 43 points in the third quarter to lead by 13 points, only to squander the lead and fall well short in overtime. The Jazz didn’t take care of the ball as they racked up 22 turnovers and they made just 20 of their 30 free throw attempts.

Meanwhile, the Dallas Mavericks have split their first eight games but they are looking to snap a two-game skid after falling painfully short to the Spurs in a heartbreaking 112-111 road defeat on Wednesday. Kyrie Irving led the team with 29 points, seven rebounds and five assists, Naji Marshall provided the spark off the bench with 22 points on nine of 12 shooting, PJ Washington tallied 21 points with 10 rebounds while Cooper Flagg chipped in with 19 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. As a team, the Mavericks shot just 38 percent from the field and 14 of 37 from the 3-point line as they worked so hard to claw their way back from an early 19-point deficit, only to fall short in the final seconds when the Spurs’ Victor Wembenyama nailed the game winning free throw to cap a career-high 52-point performance.

The Jazz will again be without Trey Alexander, Jaren Jackson Jr and Jusuf Nurkic, while the Mavericks have ruled out Dereck Lively II and Tarik Biberovic.
The Jazz have been doing it tough during their current six-game slide because they were close in three of those defeats and two of them went into overtime. In contrast, the Mavericks have been in decent shape despite their injuries and they would’ve taken plenty of positives from their narrow loss to the surging Spurs in their last outing. The Jazz are capable of making this one interesting if Keyonte George has another big game like he did on Wednesday, but I like what I saw from the Mavericks in their last game and I think they can get the comfortable win at home behind big games from Irving and Flagg.
