The Cleveland Cavaliers and the New York Knicks collide at Madison Square Garden for Game 3 on Friday night.
The Cleveland Cavaliers now have their eyes on taking the lead in the series after routing the Knicks in a 107-90 blowout win in Game 2 on Tuesday. Darius Garland led the way with 32 points and seven assists, Caris LeVert added 24 points off the bench while Donovan Mitchell chipped in with 17 points and 13 assists. As a team, the Cavaliers shot 49 percent from the field and 14 of 33 from the 3-point line as they took control of the contest with a 34-17 second quarter push and they didn’t stop pushing until the lead blew out to 29 points. The Cavaliers committed 17 turnovers and they got just five points on two of nine shooting from Cedi Osman, but they were locked in defensively as they Knicks couldn’t get any scoring rhythm until the fourth quarter.
Meanwhile, the New York Knicks must have been so full of confidence after winning the series opener, but they came crashing back down to Earth with a big loss in Game 2. Julius Randle led the team with 22 points, Jalen Brunson added 20 points with six assists and four steals while RJ Barrett chipped in with 14 points. As a team, the Knicks shot just 36 percent from the field and seven of 29 from the 3-point line as they struggled with the pressure defense of the Cavaliers and were always fighting an uphill battle after scoring just 17 points in the second quarter. The Knicks needed Brunson to lead the way with his scoring, but he had a rough night, shooting just five of 17 from the field and one of eight from the 3-point line.
Looking at the betting trends, the Cavaliers are 4-1-1 ATS in their last six road games, 2-5 ATS in their last seven games against a team with a winning record and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games following a win of more than 10 points. The Knicks are 1-4 ATS in their last five Conference Quarterfinals games, 5-1 ATS in their last six games against a team above .600 and 1-4 ATS in their last five games playing on two days’ rest.
Head to head, the under is 4-1 in the last five meetings overall and the Cavaliers are 1-4 ATS in the last five meetings overall.
The Cavaliers made up for their loss in Game 1 by blowing away the Knicks with ease in Game 2 to square up the series. Garland led the way with his scoring on Tuesday, while Mitchell played more of a facilitator role, finishing with 17 points and 13 assists. The Knicks will be disappointed that they missed on a chance to take a 2-0 series lead, but they have home-court advantage, and a win here would put them back in control. You can make an argument for either side here as this one will surely go down to the wire, but I’m leaning towards the Knicks to bounce back and get the narrow win in front of a packed house.
