The Minnesota Timberwolves play host to the Charlotte Hornets at the Target Center on Friday night.
The Charlotte Hornets have been in poor form as they’ve lost seven of their last nine games overall, but they will be aiming for a third straight victory after taking down the lowly Spurs in a 120-110 win last Wednesday. LaMelo Ball led the team with a triple-double of 28 points with 12 rebounds and 10 assists, PJ Washington added 22 points with 10 rebounds and three blocks while Gordon Hayward chipped in with 16 points. As a team, the Hornets shot 44 percent from the field and 14 of 35 from the 3-point line as they took control of the contest with 60 points in the first half, but they couldn’t really gain any separation until late in the fourth quarter where they went on a decisive 14-4 run to slip away in the end.
Meanwhile, the Minnesota Timberwolves have been in decent form as they’ve won nine of their last 15 games overall, but they will be looking to bounce back here after coming up short against the Wizards in a 114-106 loss last Thursday. Anthony Edwards led the team with 34 points, Kyle Anderson added 18 points while Rudy Gobert tallied 17 points with 19 rebounds and three blocks. As a team, the Timberwolves shot just 41 percent from the field and eight of 29 from the 3-point line as they exploded for 36 points in the first quarter to jump out to an early 20-point lead, but they never put the Wizards away and eventually got burned in the fourth quarter where they got outscored by 38-19 to allow the Wizards to steal the game in the end.
Looking at the betting trends, the Hornets are 0-4 ATS in their last four road games, 6-1 ATS in their last seven games playing on three or more days rest and 2-6 ATS in their last eight games overall. The Timberwolves are 7-0 ATS in their last seven games following a loss and 19-9 ATS in their last 28 games against a team below .400.
Head to head, the over is 4-1 in the last five meetings overall, the Hornets are 5-2-1 ATS in the last eight meetings in Minnesota and the Hornets are 5-0-1 ATS in the last six meetings overall.
The Hornets are going to be shorthanded again as Cody Martin has been ruled out, while the Timberwolves are all full strength except for Karl-Anthony Towns who is still out indefinitely. The Hornets have strung together a couple of wins thanks to big games from Ball, but the Timberwolves have been the more consistent team all season and they are deserved favorites in this spot. It’s hard to split these two squads, but I just feel that the line is a bit too high here, so while I have the Timberwolves getting the win at home, I’m backing the Hornets to hang around earn the cover in the end.
