The Oklahoma City Thunder and Minnesota Timberwolves meet Wednesday in NBA action at the Target Center. The Oklahoma City Thunder have lost 3 of their last 4 regular season openers. The Minnesota Timberwolves have won each of their last 3 regular season openers.
The Oklahoma City Thunder are coming off a 24-win season and enter the third year under coach Mark Daigneault. The Thunder are still in rebuild mode for the most part, as they have just one player over the age of 29. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the face of this Thunder franchise, but Josh Giddey, Luguentz Dort and Darius Bazley have shown flashes and OKC hopes they can all blossom together and become a force in a year or two. Of course, the injury to Chet Holmgren doesn’t help the Thunder and would have certainly made them a lot more exciting, but this franchise is still a couple of years away anyway. It’s all about the baby steps when it comes to the Thunder.
The Minnesota Timberwolves won 46 games last year and enter the third season under coach Chris Finch. The Timberwolves hope to build on last year’s success, and they bring back D’Angelo Russell, Anthony Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns. However, the Timberwolves went all in with the trade of Rudy Gobert, which lost them Malik Beasley and Jaden McDaniels in the process. The Timberwolves also lost Patrick Beverley, who was key defensively and with his leadership. It’s going to be interesting how this bigger lineup works in today’s league, and if there’s enough shooting to survive. Either way, the Timberwolves pushed all their chips in the middle of the table with their current roster.
The Thunder are 27-11 ATS in their last 38 road games and 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Timberwolves are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 home games and 3-7 ATS in their last 10 games overall. The over is 17-8-1 in Thunder last 26 overall. The under is 4-1 in Timberwolves last 5 overall. The Thunder are 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings in Minnesota and 5-12-1 ATS in the last 18 meetings.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are obviously the better team here and should be favored, especially at home. However, this is a lot of points for a season opener, especially when the Timberwolves have a lot of new faces and are still working in a major new starter. Also, let's not forget that OKC was a covering machine on the road last season. Lots of points here. I'll take a shot with OKC as the road dog.
