The Denver Nuggets and Utah Jazz meet Wednesday in NBA action at the Vivint Arena. The Denver Nuggets have won 3 of their last 4 regular season openers. The Utah Jazz have won each of their last 5 regular season openers.
The Denver Nuggets are coming off a 48-win season and enter the eighth year under coach Michael Malone. The Nuggets have to feel wonderful about themselves as they have their superstar in Nikola Jokić, but the return of Michael Porter Jr. and Jamal Murray will do wonders. Aaron Gordon has gotten comfortable in Denver, while the additions of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, DeAndre Jordan and Bruce Brown just make the Nuggets that much deeper. Assuming the Nuggets finally got over their injury issues, they’re a legit title contender coming out of the West. The Nuggets have a roster that can go toe-to-toe with any in the league, it’s just a matter of staying healthy.
The Utah Jazz have made the playoffs the last 6 years but are in a full rebuild with first time head coach Will Hardy leading the way. The Jazz said goodbye to Donovan Mitchell, Bojan Bogdanovic and Rudy Gobert this offseason, going from contenders to the worst odds to win the title overnight. Now, the good news is the Jazz are more talented than your average team that rebuilds. Collin Sexton is a talented shooting guard who still has youth on his side. Malik Beasley has proven to be a consistent player, and Jordan Clarkson has been one of the best bench players the last two seasons. Lauri Markkanen has also been great through 5 seasons and is only 25 years old. The Jazz may not have any franchise players, but there are players to work with here. You’re going to find value all year with the Jazz in the underdog role, as they’re not as bad as many make you believe.
The Nuggets are 11-5 ATS in their last 16 road games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up win. The Jazz are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games and 18-39-4 ATS in their last 61 games overall. The over is 5-1 in Nuggets last 6 overall. The under is 6-2 in Jazz last 8 overall. The Nuggets are 5-13 ATS in the last 18 meetings in Utah and 1-4 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
The Denver Nuggets are clearly the better team here and should be favored. However, I'm not as down on the Jazz as most people are. Yes, the household names are gone, but the Jazz still have a decent roster capable of winning games. You can do worse than a Conley, Sexton back court and guys like Markkanen, Vanderbilt and Clarkson are quality role players. Until proven otherwise, I'll take my chances with the Jazz and free buckets.
