The Charlotte Hornets and San Antonio Spurs meet Wednesday in NBA action at the AT&T Center. The Charlotte Hornets have split their last 6 regular season openers. The San Antonio Spurs have won each of their last 6 regular season openers.
The Charlotte Hornets won 43 games last year and bring back Steve Clifford as head coach. Clifford coached the Hornets for five seasons before James Borrego and actually led them to their last 2 postseason berths. As for the roster, the Hornets have an intriguing group of players as LaMelo Ball and Terry Rozier is one of the more underrated backcourts and P.J. Washington still has untapped potential. Obviously, the ceiling greatly improves if Gordon Hayward can ever return to the player he once was with the Utah Jazz. Kelly Oubre Jr. and Jalen McDaniels are nice depth players, and the addition of Dennis Smith Jr. has boom or bust potential. The talent is there for the Hornets to make their first playoff trip since the 2015-16 season.
The San Antonio Spurs are coming off 34 wins and enter the 27th year under coach Gregg Popovich. The Spurs weren’t very good last year, and they traded away their best player in Dejounte Murray. There’s a reason why Popovich told people not to bet on the Spurs to win the NBA title this season. This season is all about finding players who can be part of the future of this franchise. There’s only two players on this roster who are 30 years old or older. Guys like Tre Jones, Keldon Johnson, Joshua Primo and Romeo Langford have golden chances to prove they can be a face of a team. It will be interesting to see what a healthy Zach Collins looks like. Jakob Poeltl, Josh Richardson and Doug McDermott are the veterans of this Spurs team. With all the winning the Spurs have done over the last decades, a down year here or there shouldn’t be a big deal.
The Hornets are 15-5-1 ATS in their last 21 road games and 20-8 ATS in their last 28 Wednesday games. The Spurs are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games and 10-1 ATS in their last 11 games overall. The over is 4-0 in Hornets last 4 road games. The under is 4-1 in Spurs last 5 home games. The Hornets are 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings.
The San Antonio Spurs aren't a good team, and I'm not eager to back them in any role. With that said, the Charlotte Hornets aren't exactly world beaters, and they're going to be without their best player in Ball. That injury to their star point guard makes this pretty much a toss up game. I'll give the slight edge to the Spurs at home, but there are better options out there on a loaded Wednesday NBA card.
