The Boston Celtics and the Golden State Warriors collide in a pivotal Game 5 of the NBA Finals at the Chase Center on Monday night.
The Boston Celtics will be hoping to reclaim the series lead after coming up short against the Warriors in a 107-97 loss in Game 4 on Friday. Jayson Tatum led the team with 23 points, 11 rebounds and six assists, Jaylen Brown added 21 points, Marcus Smart added 18 points while Derrick White chipped in with 16 points off the bench. As a team, the Celtics shot just 40 percent from the field and 15 of 38 from the 3-point line as they got off to a quick start and jumped out to a five-point lead going into halftime. The Celtics surrendered their lead in the third quarter and could never find their offense in the fourth quarter where they managed just 19 points. Brown got the team off to a flyer, but was plagued by foul trouble, while Tatum shot just eight of 23 from the field while committing six turnovers.
Meanwhile, the Golden State Warriors knew they needed to avoid falling into a 3-1 series deficit and they were able to get it done thanks to a monster night from Stephen Curry who led the way with 43 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Klay Thompson added 18 points including a clutch late three while Andrew Wiggins tallied 17 points with 16 rebounds. As a team, the Warriors shot 44 percent from the field and 15 of 43 from the 3-point line as they kept pace with the Celtics in a close contest until the fourth quarter where they really started to pull away once coach Kerr decided to bench Draymond Green who finished with just two points on one of seven shooting. Jordan Poole scored 14 points off the bench while Kevon Looney chipped in with six points and 11 rebounds in 28 minutes off the bench.
Looking at the betting trends, the Celtics are 8-1 ATS in their last nine games playing on two days’ rest, 34-16-1 ATS in their last 51 road games and 17-8-1 ATS in their last 26 games overall. The Warriors are 5-1 ATS in their last six home games, 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games against a team with a winning record and 7-3 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
Head to head, the under is 18-6 in the last 24 meetings overall, the Celtics are 6-2-1 ATS in the last nine meetings overall and the Celtics are 9-2 ATS in the last 11 meetings in Golden State.
The Celtics will be kicking themselves after missing out on a chance to take a commanding 3-1 series lead, while the Warriors will be feeling relieved after squaring up the series thanks to 43 points from Curry. The Warriors will take plenty of confidence from their crucial win in Game 4, but they will be feeling a little lucky that Curry was able to drag them over the line as the rest of the team were a little below their best. It took a big night from Curry and a stellar coaching decision to get past the Celtics on the road, but I expect the role players to step up at home. The Celtics have been great at bouncing back from losses in this postseason, but Robert Williams is currently listed as questionable after tweaking his knee in Game 5, so I’m sticking with the Warriors to get the narrow win at home.
