The Brooklyn Nets and the Boston Celtics collide in Game 1 at the TD Garden on Sunday afternoon.
The Brooklyn Nets had to do some extra work to get into the playoffs, but they will be full of confidence after outlasting the Cavaliers in a 115-108 win in Tuesday’s play-in game. Kyrie Irving led the way with 34 points and 12 assists on 12 of 15 shooting, Kevin Durant added 25 points with 11 assists, Bruce Brown racked up 18 points with nine rebounds and eight assists while Andre Drummond tallied 16 points with eight rebounds. As a team, the Nets shot 53 percent from the field and nine of 28 from the 3-point line as they stormed out of the gates with 40 points in the first quarter to take the early 22-point lead, but it wasn’t all smooth sailing as their lead was cut to just six points early in the fourth quarter before they pulled away to book their ticket to the playoffs.
Meanwhile, the Boston Celtics have been in red-hot form for a while now as they’ve won 15 of their last 19 games of the regular season to finish with a 51-31 record, good enough for the 2nd seed in the Eastern Conference. Jayson Tatum led the team with averages of 26.9 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game, Jaylen Brown averaged 23.6 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game while Marcus Smart averaged 12.1 points, 5.9 assists and 1.7 steals per game. As a team, the Celtics scored 111.8 points per game while shooting 46.6 percent from the field and 35.6 percent from the 3-point line.
Looking at the betting trends, the Nets are 0-7 ATS in their last seven Sunday games, 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 road games and 2-6 ATS in their last eight games overall. The Celtics are 20-8-1 ATS in their last 29 games against a team with a winning record and 4-0 ATS in their last four games overall.
Head to head, the over is 4-0 in the last four meetings overall and the Nets are 13-6 ATS in the last 19 meetings overall.
The Nets are still waiting for the debut of Ben Simmons who is hopeful to play in Game 4, but for now, they’re going with the dynamic duo of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving which should pose plenty of problems for the Celtics who have been leaning heavily on Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown to shoulder the scoring load. These two teams met four times in the regular season and it was the Celtics who have won the last three meetings. It’s tempting to take the Nets with the points, but the Celtics have been the more consistent team all season, they’re well-rested and they have home-court advantage. This should be a close one, but I’ll go with the Celtics to kick off the series with a narrow win and cover in this spot.
