The Minnesota Timberwolves and the Memphis Grizzlies duke it out in Game 1 at the FedExForum on Saturday afternoon.
The Minnesota Timberwolves are coming into this series with plenty of confidence after taking down the Clippers in a 109-104 win back on Tuesday. Anthony Edwards drained five 3-pointers to lead the team with 30 points on 10 of 21 shooting, D’Angelo Russell added 29 points with six assists while Malik Beasley chipped in with 12 points off the bench. As a team, the Timberwolves shot just 43 percent from the field and 14 of 35 from the 3-point line as they looked to be in trouble after leaking 33 points in the third quarter to fall behind by as many as 10 points early in the fourth quarter, before they rallied with a decisive 16-2 run to flip the game on its head and escape with the unlikely victory.
Meanwhile, the Memphis Grizzlies have been one of the most impressive teams all season and they will be eager to begin their playoff run after winning 56 games in the regular season. Ja Morant missed 25 games this season but still led the team with averages of 27.4 points, 5.7 rebounds and 6.7 assists per game, Dillon Brooks averaged 18.4 points in the 32 games he played, Desmond Bane averaged 18.2 points while Jaren Jackson Jr. averaged 16.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. As a team, the Grizzlies scored 115.6 points per game, while shooting 46.1 percent from the field and 35.3 percent from the 3-point line.
Looking at the betting trends, the Timberwolves are 1-4 ATS in their last five road games, 2-5 ATS in their last seven games against a team with a winning record and 0-4 ATS in their last four games overall. The Grizzlies are 17-4 ATS in their last 21 home games, 14-3 ATS in their last 17 games as a home favorite and 42-20-1 ATS in their last 63 games overall.
Head to head, the Timberwolves are 5-16 ATS in the last 21 meetings overall and the Timberwolves are 8-24 ATS in the last 32 meetings in Memphis.
The Timberwolves would have taken so much confidence from their comeback win over the Clippers on Tuesday and what made it more impressive was that they were able to do it despite Karl-Anthony Towns finishing with just 11 points on three of 11 shooting in one of his worst games of the season. The Grizzlies have been one of the most consistent teams in the league all season as they’ve played well without and without Ja Morant, but they are primed for a deep run this season with the team back at full strength. It’s hard to split these two teams at the moment but the Timberwolves are 5-16 ATS in the last 21 meetings overall, so I’ll stick with the Grizzlies to draw first blood at home in this spot.
