The San Antonio Spurs play host to the New York Knicks at the AT&T Center on Tuesday night.
The New York Knicks have been in a rut as they’ve lost four of their past five games and they will be hoping to arrest a three-game slide after getting routed by the Nuggets in a 113-99 home loss on Saturday. Julius Randle led the team in scoring with 24 points, seven rebounds and eight assists, Evan Fournier added 15 points with five assists while RJ Barrett chipped in with 13 points. As a team, the Knicks shot just 39 percent from the field and 12 of 40 from the 3-point line as they fell behind by nine points at halftime, before allowing 32 points in the third quarter to trail by as many as 30 points. The Knicks simply had no answers on defense for the Nuggets’ Nikola Jokic who poured in 32 points in just 27 minutes.
Meanwhile, the San Antonio Spurs have been in great shape as they were riding a four-game win streak before getting stopped in their tracks by the Suns in a 108-104 road loss last night. Dejounte Murray led the team with 17 points and 14 assists, Bryn Forbes provided the spark off the bench with 15 points, while Doug McDermott and Jakob Poeltl each scored 14 points. As a team, the Spurs shot 43 percent from the field and 11 of 29 from the 3-point line as they squandered an early 11-point lead, before rallying back from a 16-point deficit to tie the game midway through the fourth quarter. However, they went ice-cold when it mattered most as they went scoreless for 2:42 to allow the Suns to steal the game late.
Looking at the betting trends, the Knicks are 19-9 ATS in their last 28 road games, 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games against a team with a losing record and 8-3-1 ATS in their last 12 games playing on two days’ rest. The Spurs are 5-2 ATS in their last seven home games, 1-3-1 ATS in their last five games playing on zero days’ rest and 4-0 ATS in their last four games as an underdog.
Head to head, the over is 8-1-1 in the last 10 meetings in San Antonio and the Knicks are 1-4 ATS in the last five meetings overall.
The Knicks haven’t been able to build any momentum lately as they continue to tinker with their lineup and their confidence took another hit after getting routed by the Nuggets at home on Saturday. The Spurs have come to life with four straight wins and they will be kicking themselves after rallying back against the Suns only to leave empty handed. The Knicks need a win to steady the ship and they have the advantage of an extra days’ rest, but the Spurs are playing their best basketball of the season and I think they represent decent value as home underdogs in this spot.
