The New Orleans Pelicans invade the Capital One Arena to take on the Washington Wizards on Monday night.
The New Orleans Pelicans have been in terrible form as they’ve lost 12 of their first 14 games overall, but they will be looking to build some momentum after taking down the Grizzlies in a 112-101 upset on Saturday. Nickeil Alexander-Walker led the team with 21 points, Brandon Ingram added 19 points while Jonas Valanciunas and Devonte’ Graham each scored 15 points. As a team, the Pelicans shot 48 percent from the field and 14 of 29 from the 3-point line as they stormed out of the gates to an early double-digit lead after scoring 35 points in the first quarter, before pushing the margin out to 22 points in a game in which they never trailed.
Meanwhile, the Washington Wizards have been one of the form teams of the league as they’ve won nine of their last 12 games overall and they will be eager to build on their current four-game win streak after routing the Magic in a 104-92 road win on Saturday. Spencer Dinwiddie led the team with 23 points, 11 rebounds and six assists, Montrezl Harrell added 20 points with seven assists off the bench while Kyle Kuzma chipped in with 17 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks. As a team, the Wizards shot 50 percent from the field and 12 of 35 from the 3-point line, but this win was more about their defensive effort as they held the Magic to just 37 points in the first half to lead by 13 points at halftime, before pouring in 32 points in the third quarter as the margin ballooned to 25 points.
Looking at the betting trends, the Pelicans are 0-4 ATS in their last four road games, 1-4 ATS in their last five games against a team with a winning record and 2-5 ATS in their last seven games overall. The Wizards are 6-1 ATS in their last seven home games, 21-7-1 ATS in their last 29 games against a team with a losing record and 28-12-1 ATS in their last 41 games overall.
Head to head, the under is 19-7 in the last 26 meetings overall, the Pelicans are 0-5 ATS in the last five meetings in Washington and the Pelicans are 3-9 ATS in the last 12 meetings overall.
The Pelicans have probably been the worst team in the league so far but are coming off their best performance so far after beating the Raptors, so they will be quietly confident here. However, the Wizards are clearly the better team in this matchup, they’ve won four straight and are a solid 6-1 ATS in their last seven home games. The Pelicans are 0-5 ATS in the last five meetings in Washington and I think that trend continues as the Wizards are great value at the short line even though they are still shorthanded.
