The San Antonio Spurs and the Los Angeles Lakers collide at the Staples Center on Sunday afternoon.
The San Antonio Spurs have been in a slump as they’ve lost four of their past six games and they will be hoping to bounce back in this one after getting routed by the Mavericks in a 123-109 home loss on Friday. Devin Vassell led the team with 20 points on six of 11 shooting off the bench, Keldon Johnson and Dejounte Murray each scored 15 points while Doug McDermott chipped in with 14 points. As a team, the Spurs shot 48 percent from the field and 13 of 30 from the 3-point line, but once again their problems were on the defensive end as they fell behind early after allowing 68 points in the first half, before getting blown out in the third quarter where they were outscored by 34-20 to trail by as many as 27 points. Lonnie Walker finished with just 10 points on three of 11 shooting while Derrick White had another quiet game of just five points on two of five shooting.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Lakers have been in decent shape as they’ve won five of their past eight games, but they will be hoping for a better performance in this one after getting embarrassed by the Timberwolves in a 107-83 home loss on Friday. Anthony Davis led the team with 22 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, Russell Westbrook added 20 points on seven of 11 shooting, but no other player finished in double figures in scoring. As a team, the Lakers shot just 35 percent from the field and nine of 41 from the 3-point line as they looked in control after taking the narrow lead into halftime, but they took their foot off the gas and quickly found themselves in deep trouble as the Timberwolves outscored them by 40-12 in the third quarter to win comfortably in the end. Malik Monk finished with just seven points on three of 11 shooting while Carmelo Anthony had a night to forget as he scored just three points on one of 12 shooting off the bench.
Looking at the betting trends, the Spurs are 5-0 ATS in their last five games following a loss, 5-2 ATS in their last seven road games and 3-1-1 ATS in their last five games against a team with a winning record. The Lakers are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 home games, 1-6 ATS in their last seven games against a team with a losing record and 4-12 ATS in their last 16 games overall.
Head to head, the under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings overall and the Spurs are 2-5 ATS in the last seven meetings overall.
The Spurs haven’t been able to build momentum this season and their confidence took another hit after getting routed by the Mavericks in their own building on Friday. The Lakers haven’t been at their best lately as they have been struggling with injuries, but Anthony Davis is listed as probable for this one which is enough to see the Lakers open as slight favorites at home. This is a tough one to pick, but the Spurs are 2-5 ATS in the last seven meetings overall and I think that trend continues here as the Lakers do just enough to get the win and cover at home.
