The Dallas Mavericks travel to the State Farm Arena to take on the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday night.
The Dallas Mavericks are coming into the regular season with plenty of momentum after going 4-0 in the preseason, with three of those wins coming against the Jazz, Clippers and the Bucks. Following another early exit in the playoffs, the Mavericks made plenty of moves in the offseason and let JJ Redick and Josh Richardson go, while picking up Reggie Bullock, Sterling Brown and Frank Ntilikina and naming Jason Kidd as the new head coach. Luka Doncic remains the central piece for the Mavericks and he looked fantastic in preseason, but someone who looks primed for a bounce back season is Kristaps Porzingis who is coming off a healthy offseason.
Meanwhile, the Atlanta Hawks will be looking to go even further in the playoffs this season, but instead of trading draft picks for veteran players or searching for a superstar, they opted to take a wait and see approach by returning with the same roster. Trae Young has proven himself as a true threat in the playoffs, John Collins remains one of the most underrated bigs in the league, Clint Capela will likely lead the league in rebounds again while the ageless Lou Williams is still a quality sixth man.
Looking at the betting trends, the Mavericks are 7-3 ATS in their last 10 road games, 4-0 ATS in their last four games playing on three or more days rest and 1-4 ATS in their last five games as an underdog. The Hawks are 21-8 ATS in their last 29 home games and 4-1 ATS in their last five games as a favorite.
Head to head, the Mavericks are 3-12 ATS in the last 15 meetings overall and the Mavericks are 2-6 ATS in the last eight meetings in Atlanta.
The Mavericks were really hampered by injuries for most of last season, but they went undefeated in the preseason and they already look better with a healthy Porzingis on the court. The Hawks' only notable signing in the offseason was Gorgui Dieng to back up Capela, so they focused on continuity by sticking with the same roster that exceeded all expectations last season. It’s always a fun battle when Doncic and Young renew their rivalry, but with the line so short, I have to lean towards the Hawks who are 6-2 ATS in the last eight meetings in Atlanta.
