The Sacramento Kings and Portland Trail Blazers meet Wednesday in NBA action at the Moda Center. The Sacramento Kings won 31 games last year and are still looking for their first playoff trip since the 2005-06 season. The Portland Trail Blazers won 42 games last year and will begin the Chauncey Billups head coaching era.
The Sacramento Kings didn’t do much to improve their roster this off season outside of using a lottery pick on Davion Mitchell and bringing in Alex Len for front court depth. The good news for the Kings is that they didn’t lose anybody noteworthy. A backcourt of De’Aaron Fox and Buddy Hield is still intact despite trade rumors, and Harrison Barnes is back after one of the better seasons of his career. Richaun Holmes has clearly found himself these last two seasons, and a healthy Marvin Bagley III certainly raises the King's ceiling. It will also be interesting to see any improvements from Tyrese Haliburton, who flashed serious promise as a rookie and even started 20 games last year. The Kings are desperate to end the postseason drought, and there’s potential here to push the bottom playoff contenders.
The Portland Trail Blazers made a ton of changes to their roster, but I’m not sure Larry Nance Jr., Tony Snell, Cody Zeller and Dennis Smith Jr. are moving the needle. The addition of Ben McLemore has a chance to be big given his scoring ability. Still, the Trail Blazers will go as far as Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum take them, as there’s still not a third star to put this Portland squad over the top. Norman Powell and Jusuf Nurkic are nice players, but the Trail Blazers need a true third option to put themselves in a different class. It’s why the Trail Blazers have been bounced in the first round in four of the last five years, and part of the reason why Lillard was in trade rumors this off season. The Trail Blazers better find a way to win, or they could soon lose one of their best players in franchise history.
The Kings are 8-1 ATS in their last 9 road games and 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The Trail Blazers are 25-7 ATS in their last 32 Wednesday games and 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall. The under is 26-10 in Kings last 36 overall. The over is 6-1 in Trail Blazers last 7 overall. The over is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings.
The Sacramento Kings were solid in the underdog role last season, so you shouldn't take them lightly. However, the Portland Trail Blazers are as healthy as they've been in years, and it's about time they do something. If not this year, the Trail Blazers are better off just blowing things up. This is it. The Trail Blazers need to come out and make a statement, and it starts with this game. I'll lay the reasonable chalk, but the Trail Blazers are on a short leash in my eyes.
