The Orlando Magic and San Antonio Spurs meet Wednesday in NBA action at the AT&T Center. The Orlando Magic are coming off a 21-win season and will make the head coaching debut of Jamahl Mosley. The San Antonio Spurs have missed the playoffs the last two seasons and now appear to be in rebuild mode.
The Orlando Magic are a young team that feels like it's on the rise, and the additions of Jalen Suggs and Franz Wagner should improve their outlook. Suggs should make an immediate impact and is a strong candidate for Rookie of the Year. The Magic hope Markelle Fultz can make another leap and a center tandem of Wendell Carter Jr. and Mo Bamba is up there with the best in the league. Terrence Ross is the grizzly veteran on this Magic roster and capable of big games here and there, and Cole Anthony has shown flashes throughout his young career. A healthy Michael Carter-Williams also wouldn’t hurt, but he is recovering from ankle surgery. The Orlando Magic have intriguing pieces, and they could be a bottom seed playoff contender if things break right.
The San Antonio Spurs will look like a completely different team with the departures of DeMar DeRozan, Patty Mills, Rudy Gay, Trey Lyles and Gorgui Dieng. In hopes of being somewhat competitive, the Spurs bring in Al-Farouq Aminu, Thaddeus Young, Doug McDermott, Zach Collins and Bryn Forbes. The Spurs also drafted Joshua Primo and Joe Wieskamp. There’s a ton of new faces on this Spurs roster and not a ton of time to build chemistry. Dejounte Murray and Derrick White are now the leaders in this Spurs' clubhouse in terms of familiarity, and they’re still relatively young players themselves. We haven’t seen the Spurs in this position in quite some time.
The Magic are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games and 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games overall. The Spurs are 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 home games and 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games as a favorite. The over is 14-5 in Magic last 19 overall. The over is 4-1 in Spurs last 5 overall. The Magic are 6-2 ATS in the last 8 meetings in San Antonio.
The San Antonio Spurs are going to get their respect because of their reputation and consistency, but they're not nearly the same team they've been in years past, and you're going to make money betting against them. The Orlando Magic aren't the most talented team in the world, but they have some pieces that should make them competitive, and you could cash some tickets with them in the underdog role. I kind of like the Magic here and the decent amount of points were getting.
