The Indiana Pacers pay a visit to the Charlotte Hornets at the Spectrum Center on Wednesday night
The Indiana Pacers will be hoping to move on from a disappointing, injury-riddled season, but it’s hard to imagine too much improvement given their lack of activity in the offseason. Domantas Sabonis remains the best player for the Pacers and he will likely shoulder the scoring load early in the season with Caris LeVert and TJ Warren both nursing injuries. Malcolm Brogdon was a rock for the Pacers when healthy and he could flourish once LeVert is able to join the starting lineup while Myles Turner could be set for a breakout season given the team’s lack of depth at the center spot.
Meanwhile, the Charlotte Hornets will be eager to build on their success from last season after LaMelo Ball breathed life into the franchise with his dazzling passing. Malik Monk, Devonte’ Graham and Cody Zeller were all shipped away, while Kelly Oubre Jr. joins the team, so there will still be plenty of opportunity for Terry Rozier and Gordon Hayward to improve on last season’s numbers. It would be unrealistic to expect the Hornets to make the playoffs this season, but there’s plenty of optimism around the development of Ball.
Looking at the betting trends, the Pacers are 6-2-1 ATS in their last nine road games and 39-18-2 ATS in their last 59 games playing on three or more days rest. The Hornets are 12-5 ATS in their last 17 games as a favorite and 14-5 ATS in their last 19 games following a loss of more than 10 points.
Head to head, the over is 5-1-1 in the last seven meetings in Charlotte and the Pacers are 3-10 ATS in the last 13 meetings in Charlotte.
I think the Pacers are set to build on their success from last season, especially once their roster returns to full strength. The Hornets didn’t look too good in preseason as they lost three of four and there was some real cause for concern in their 68-point loss to the Mavericks, but you never want to take preseason games too seriously. With the Pacers still shorthanded, these two teams match up pretty evenly, but I’m leaning towards the Hornets to kick off their season with a narrow win and cover at home.
