The Phoenix Suns travel to the Staples Center to do battle with the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 3 on Thursday night.
The Phoenix Suns were full of confidence after taking the series opener on Sunday, but they will be feeling a little worried after dropping Game 2 to the Lakers in a 109-102 loss on Tuesday. Devin Booker led the team with 31 points on seven of 17 shooting, DeAndre Ayton added 22 points with 10 rebounds on 11 of 13 shooting while Cameron Payne heated up late to finish with 19 points and seven assists off the bench. As a team, the Suns shot 46 percent from the field and eight of 26 from the 3-point line as they fought hard in the second half to push the Lakers late, but they needed more Chris Paul who finished with just six points and five assists in 23 minutes of action as he was clearly hampered by that shoulder injury he suffered in Game 1.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Lakers will be feeling so much better after levelling the series with a hard-fought win in Game 2 on Tuesday. Anthony Davis needed to step up after struggling in the series opener and he delivered with 34 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, Dennis Schroder heated up late to finish with 24 points while LeBron James steered the offense with 23 points and nine assists. As a team, the Lakers shot 45 percent from the field and 10 of 33 from the 3-point line as they got off to a quick start with 30 points in the first quarter, before holding off the Suns’ late rally after they cut a 15-point lead to just three points with 2:55 remaining.
Looking at the betting trends, the Suns are 1-3-1 ATS in their last five road games, 6-2-1 ATS in their last nine playoff games as an underdog and 1-3-1 ATS in their last five games overall. The Lakers are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 home games, 0-4 ATS in their last four games as a home favorite and 5-11-1 ATS in their last 17 games overall.
Head to head, the under is 7-3-1 in the last 11 meetings overall and the Suns are 2-5 ATS in the last seven meetings in Los Angeles.
The Suns will be so disappointed with how Game 2 finished as they must be feeling that they could’ve won if Paul was healthy. Booker shook off a slow start to finish with 31 points and they got another efficient scoring night from Ayton, but they’re going to need more from other players to get a win on the road against this Lakers team now that Davis has woken up. I’m sure CP3 will tough it out and play through the shoulder injury again, but I don’t like the Suns’ chances without him at 100 percent. With that being said, I’m sticking with the Lakers to take the lead in the series with a big win here as their role players step up at home.
