The Washington Wizards and the Philadelphia 76ers duke it out in Game 2 at the Wells Fargo Center on Wednesday night.
The Washington Wizards fought hard to earn their ticket into the playoffs and they will be looking to bounce back after dropping the series opener to the 76ers in a 125-118 loss on Sunday. Bradley Beal led the team with 33 points, 10 rebounds and six assists, Russell Westbrook added 16 points with 14 assists while Davis Bertans chipped in with 14 points off the bench. As a team, the Wizards shot 55 percent from the field and eight of 20 from the 3-point line as they got off to a solid start and kept pace with the 76ers until the third quarter where they allowed the 76ers to pour in 38 points. Still, the Wizards will take plenty of confidence from the fact that they were within five points late in the game but they just had no answer for Tobias Harris who killed them all night.
Meanwhile, the Philadelphia 76ers had to wait a long time to kick off the series, but they did it in fine fashion behind big games from their three best players. Tobias Harris led the team with a game-high 37 points on 15 of 29 shooting, Joel Embiid added 30 points on nine of 16 shooting while Ben Simmons racked up six points with 15 rebounds and 15 assists. As a team, the 76ers shot 49 percent from the field and 10 of 32 from the 3-point line, but they couldn’t shake off the pesky Warriors until the third quarter where they exploded for 38 points to lead by as many as 11 points before holding on for the narrow win. Seth Curry played a key role as he scored 15 points on six of 13 shooting, but the 76ers will hope to get more production from their bench players who combined for just 26 points.
Looking at the betting trends, the Wizards are 7-0-1 ATS in their last eight games following a loss, 18-7-1 ATS in their last 26 road games and 19-6-1 ATS in their last 26 games overall. The 76ers are 6-2-1 ATS in their last nine home games, 5-2 ATS in their last seven games against a team with a losing record and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games as a favorite.
Head to head, the over is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings in Philadelphia, the Wizards are 3-7 ATS in the last 10 meetings in Philadelphia and the Wizards are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings overall.
The Wizards will be disappointed that they weren’t able to draw first blood on Sunday, but they showed that they were more than competitive, even though the 76ers are clearly the deeper team with more talent. The Wizards need more scoring from Westbrook and Hachimura as Beal can only do so much on his own, but I don’t see that happening until the series moves to Washington. With that being said, I’m sticking with the 76ers to get the job done and take a 2-0 series lead.
