The Houston Rockets pay a visit to the San Antonio Spurs at the AT&T Center on Thursday night.
The Houston Rockets have had a rocky start to the season as they’ve won just three of their first nine games and they will be hoping to avoid a third straight defeat after getting routed by the Lakers in a 117-100 loss on Tuesday. Christian Wood led the team in scoring with 18 points on eight of 18 shooting, James Harden scored 16 points with six assists while DeMarcus Cousins and Eric Gordon each scored 13 points. As a team, the Rockets shot just 39 percent from the field and 12 of 40 from the 3-point line, but a slow start cost them as they never recovered after getting outscored by 35-14 in the first quarter.
Meanwhile, the San Antonio Spurs have been heating up lately as they’ve won four of their last five games and they will be looking to stay hot after taking down the Thunder in a 112-102 road win on Tuesday. Lonnie Walker led the team with 24 points on seven of 15 shooting, Keldon Johnson added 18 points on six of 11 shooting, Patty Mills scored 17 points and five assists off the bench while Dejounte Murray chipped in with 16 points and seven assists. As a team, the Spurs shot 43 percent from the field and 10 of 35 from the 3-point line as they led for most of the game, but they really had to fight till the end as the Thunder just wouldn’t go away. LaMarcus Aldridge was quietly the best player for the Spurs as he racked up 13 points with 10 rebounds, six assists and two blocks while making two timely buckets down the stretch.
Looking at the betting trends, the Rockets are 2-7 ATS in their last nine games against a team with a winning record, 1-10 ATS in their last 11 games following a double-digit loss at home and 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall. The Spurs are 3-8 ATS in the last 11 games against a team with a losing record and 2-6 ATS in their last eight home games following a road trip of seven or more days.
Head to head, the under is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings overall, the Rockets are 0-3-1 ATS in the last four meetings overall and the Rockets are 1-4 ATS in the last five meetings in San Antonio.
I’m not sure what we’re going to see from the Rockets now that the James Harden drama is finally done, but you’d think the only way is up given how they’ve played so far this season. On the other hand, the Spurs are finally starting to look like themselves as they’re healthy and stringing together wins again. The Rockets are 1-4 ATS in the last five meetings in San Antonio and I think that trend continues as the Spurs should be good enough to maintain their strong form with a win here.
Peter’s Pick San Antonio -6.5
