The Toronto Raptors and the Boston Celtics collide in Game 6 of the East Semifinals at the HP Field House on Wednesday night.
The Toronto Raptors will be hoping to stave off elimination after getting routed by the Celtics in a 111-89 loss in Game 5. Fred VanVleet led the team in scoring with 18 points and five assists, Norman Powell added 16 points off the bench while Pascal Siakam and Kyle Lowry finished with 10 points apiece. As a team, the Raptors shot just 38 percent from the field and 12 of 40 from the 3-point line as they were always fighting a losing battle after an ice-cold start saw them fall behind by 27 points going into halftime. The Raptors had all the momentum in the series after winning the last two games, but they just couldn’t make any of their wide open looks to start the game and it cost them as they trailed by as many as 30 points before they found their offense.
Meanwhile, the Boston Celtics needed to come out firing after dropping the last two games of the series and they were able to reclaim the series lead with an impressive win on Monday. Jaylen Brown led the team with 27 points on 10 of 18 shooting, Kemba Walker added 21 points with seven assists, Jayson Tatum scored 18 points with 10 rebounds and four assists while Daniel Theis and Bob Wanamaker each scored 15 points. As a team, the Celtics shot 49 percent from the field and 11 of 34 from the 3-point line as they capitalized on the Raptors’ miscues in the first half, before cruising in the second half. Tatum is still in a bit of a shooting slump as he shot just five of 15 from the field, but the Celtics did it by committee as all five starters finished in double figures.
Looking at the betting trends, the Raptors are 5-1 ATS in their last six games as an underdog, 1-4 ATS in their last five games and 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall. The Celtics are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games following a win of more than 10 points, 4-1 ATS in their last five Conference Semifinals games and 4-1 ATS in their last five games overall.
Head to head, the under is 7-0 in the last seven meetings overall, the Raptors are 2-6 ATS in the last eight meetings in Boston and the Raptors are 1-5 ATS in the last six meetings overall.
We expected the Celtics to come out aggressive to start Game 5 and they delivered as they dominated right from the tipoff to set up the easy win to reclaim the lead in the series. Now it’s up to the Raptors to respond after seeing the Celtics steal the momentum in the series. The Raptors could be shorthanded for this one as Serge Ibaka is questionable with a left ankle injury. It’s tough to pick this one as the Celtics have looked like the better team overall, but the Raptors have shown they can show up when their backs are against the wall. I’m sticking with the Raptors to bounce back and force a series decider.
