The San Antonio Spurs take on the New Orleans Pelicans at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex on Saturday night.
The San Antonio Spurs have been in pretty good form lately as they’ve won three of their five games in the bubble and they are coming into this one fresh off a 119-111 win over the Jazz on Friday. Derrick White led the team with 24 points and four assists, Jokob Poeltl added 19 points with 10 rebounds and three blocks while Lonnie Walker IV and Rudy Gay each scored 14 points. As a team, the Spurs shot 50 percent from the field and nine of 22 from the 3-point line as they started strongly to take a 10-point lead going into halftime, before holding off a second half rally. To be fair, the Jazz were severely shorthanded for this one as they were without four of their usual starters.
Meanwhile, the New Orleans Pelicans have lost three of their five games in the bubble, but they will be looking to build some momentum after taking down the lowly Wizards in a 118-107 win on Friday. Jrue Holiday led the team with 28 points and six assists on 11 of 16 shooting, Brandon Ingram added 17 points with five assists while JJ Redick chipped in with 15 points. As a team, the Pelicans shot 47 percent from the field and 12 of 35 from the 3-point line as they found themselves in a close contest with the Wizards until the third quarter where they poured in 37 points to pull away late. Zion Williamson was rested for Friday’s game against the Wizards, so he is expected to be available on Saturday.
Looking at the betting trends, the Spurs are 2-6 ATS in their last eight games against a team with a losing record, 4-1 ATS in their last five games as an underdog and 4-9 ATS in their last 13 games overall. The Pelicans are 1-4 ATS in their last five games following a win and 16-5 ATS in their last 21 games against a team with a losing record.
Head to head, the over is 4-0 in the last four meetings in New Orleans and the Spurs are 7-21 ATS in the last 28 meetings in New Orleans.
The Spurs have been doing it tough as they are without LaMarcus Aldridge, but other players like White and Poeltl are stepping up in his absence. The Pelicans have had to juggle with the availability of Williamson on a nightly basis, but they are coming into this one off a win and they will likely have Williamson back in uniform. This should be a close one and I haven’t been convinced with either team, but the Spurs are just 7-21 ATS in the last 28 meetings in New Orleans, so while this is at a neutral site, I’m taking the Pelicans to win and cover here.
