The New Orleans Pelicans and Atlanta Hawks meet Monday in NBA preseason action at the State Farm Arena.
The New Orleans Pelicans have nearly an entirely new roster from last season, so it’s key guys get on the same page rather quickly. All eyes are obviously going to be on Zion Williamson, who is the favorite to win Rookie of the Year and considered the face of the franchise from the start. However, the additions of Brandon Ingram, Jrue Holiday, Lonzo Ball and JJ Redick are highly intriguing and turn the Pelicans into a potential fun team to watch and possible dark horse playoff team. Another player to keep a close eye on is Jahlil Okafor, who has played in just 61 games the last two years, but still has some upside with him only being 23 years old. Derrick Favors is questionable with a hamstring injury. The New Orleans Pelicans have lost eight of their last nine preseason games.
The Atlanta Hawks were an exciting team last season and hope to build on that success with a young core. John Collins and Trae Young proved to be a really good duo last season and seeing how much they improve in their second and third seasons is a storyline worth watching. Well, you can now throw De'Andre Hunter and Cam Reddish into the mix, as the Hawks have young depth that could eventually blossom into something special. Outside of seeing the young players put on a show, the Hawks are also trying to get the most out of Jabari Parker, who has played no more than 51 games the last four years due to injuries. The Hawks are a very intriguing team and could start winning sooner than later. Kevin Huerter is questionable with a knee injury. The Atlanta Hawks have lost six of their last 19 preseason games.
The Pelicans are 8-0 ATS in their last 8 Monday games. The under is 6-1 in Pelicans last 7 Monday games. The over is 4-1 in Pelicans last 5 road games. The Hawks are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 Monday games. The over is 7-1 in Hawks last 8 Monday games and 5-1 in Hawks last 6 home games. The Pelicans are 0-5 ATS in the last 5 meetings. The under is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings in Atlanta and 5-2 in the last 7 meetings.
I get the Zion hype, but the Pelicans have some notable injuries as well and are laying a bucket on the road. I'm not buying it. The Atlanta Hawks are a young roster that I really like and could probably make a case for them being a dark horse playoff team this year. The Hawks are going to push the pace and score a bunch of points. Always valuable to get free points on top of a team that's already an offensive powerhouse.
