The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series makes way to World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway on Friday night for the running of the Toyota 200. Gateway is a unique 1.25- mile oval as turn 1 and 2 have are on a tighter radius than turns 3 and 4. Gateway is a flat track and Friday night’s race will consist of 160 laps to make up the 200-mile advertised distance. Friday night begins the first round of the playoffs for the Truck Series and there is no time to lose.
Here are 5 drivers to consider for the Toyota 200.
John Hunter Nemechek +250- John Hunter will fire off from the 2nd starting spot on Friday night for the Truck Series race at Gateway. Solid weekend for John and the guys at Kyle Busch Motorsports at Watkins Glen on the road course ended up with an 2nd place finish after starting 6th. John Hunter has 5 wins through 15 races on the Truck Series schedule here in 2021. John Hunter has 5 starts at Gateway in the Truck Series, has come away with 3 top 10 finishes including a win in 2017 when driving for his dad Joe. Great track position to start Friday night’s race, solid favorite.
Zane Smith +550- Smith will roll off from the 5th position for Friday’s Toyota 200 for GMS, one of the best trucks on the circuit. Zane has 10 top 10 finishes on the 2021 season including 1 top 5 finish that came at the Nashville Superspeedway. Smith has finished inside the top 10 in 7 of the last 8 races on the Truck Series circuit. Zane started on the pole in the 2020 race at Gateway leading 45 of the 160 laps on the way to a 7th place finish. Look for Smith to have a great run on Friday night.
Sheldon Creed +600– Creed will take the green flag in the Toyota 200 from the 4th starting spot. Creed has been on a roller coaster ride in the Truck Series here in 2021 6 top 5 finishes including a win at Darlington but has also crashed out in 3 of the last 6 races. Gateway has been kind to Sheldon in 2 career starts in the Truck Series with a 7th place in the 2019 race followed up by a victory last season leading the final 15 laps. Great track for Creed and team to kick off the 2021 Truck Series Playoffs.
Todd Gilliland +800- Gilliland will start Friday’s Toyota 200 from the 2nd row in the 3rd position after a nice 4th place effort at Watkins Glen International last time out. Todd has reeled off 11 top 10 finishes on the 2021 season including 7 top 5 finishes and a victory. The win for Gilliland came at the road course event in Austin, TX and had a 4th place finish at the Daytona Road Course. In 4 career Truck Series starts at Gateway, Gilliland has 2 top 5 finishes. Once again, Gilliland is one of the best values on the board Friday night and look for great things.
Austin Hill +850- Hill rides into Friday’s Toyota 200 starting from the pole position after leading 35 of the 72 total laps at Watkins Glen International 2 weeks ago. Hill has 12 top 10 finishes including 7 top 5 finishes and 2 wins to date in the NASCAR Truck Series in 2021. Austin is on fire heading into Michigan winning the last 2 races on the Truck Series circuit, first win coming on the dirt at Knoxville. Hill has done very well at covering the unique disciplines on the Truck Series to date and starting with great track position will be in contention on Friday night.
