This week we make our way back east to the Atlanta Motor Speedway for the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500. AMS is a wide 1.5 mile tri oval track, and this is the only Cup race that will be run here this year. AMS is a high tire ware track, and the drivers that manage tire ware typically win here. We didn’t find victory lane at Phoenix last weekend, but 3 of our 5 picks finished top 10. Hopefully, we can get back on the winning track this weekend at Atlanta.
Here are a 5 drivers to consider for the Fan Shield 500 this weekend.
Kevin Harvick +450- Kevin is the favorite to win here at AMS this weekend. Harvick has the best driver rating of 133.6 in the last 2 races here at AMS. Harvick has also led 226 laps at AMS in the last 2 races, the most by far. Kevin is one of the best drivers at managing tire ware, and that is one of the most important talents to have at AMS. Kevin won the 2018 Fold of Honor QuikTrip 500, and I feel he has an excellent shot to find victory lane this weekend.
Brad Keselowski +700- Brad won the race here at AMS last year in somewhat surprising fashion only leading 33 laps. Brad has the best average finish of 1.5 over the last 2 races here at AMS, as well as the 2nd best driver rating of 115.5. Brad is another driver that manages his tires very well, but his team is also very accomplished in playing out pitting strategy. Very relieving to see Brad have speed in the car last weekend at Phoenix, and I don’t see that changing this weekend at AMS.
Martin Truex Jr. +750- Truex has an average finish of 3.5 at AMS over the last 2 races. Truex is one of the best drivers at 1.5 intermediate tracks, and could be in for an awesome showing this weekend at AMS. Truex had the best quality pass percentage of 93.6 in this race last year, basically meaning he had one of the fastest cars. Truex also ran all of his laps inside the top 15. I am very confident in Martin’s ability to win this weekend.
Kurt Busch +2200- Kurt is my dark horse pick to win this weekend. Kurt quietly has 1 top 5 as well as 1 top 10 finish here at AMS in the last 2 races. Kurt has the 4th best driver rating of 111.8 over the last 2 races here at AMS. The Chevy camp has shown great speed in this early Cup season, and I expect Kurt to be at the top of the charts at AMS this weekend.
Clint Bowyer +5000- Clint is my long shot play of the week. I was concerned with Clint’s green flag speed at Vegas and Fontana. However, last week at Phoenix, Clint received my attention after capturing his first top 5 of the season. Clint has been sneaky good here at AMS over the last 2 races. Bowyer had 2 top 5 finishes and an average driver rating of 104.8 over the last 2 races at AMS, which is good enough for 6th best. I will not be shocked if we see Clint battling for a victory here at AMS on Sunday.
