The NASCAR Cup Series will run the 2nd race in the round of 12 of the 2020 playoffs on Sunday at Talladega Super Speedway in the YellaWood 500. I will focus on the last 5 races in Talladega below. Talladega is the big 2.66 mile oval, sister track to Daytona so the draft is in play all weekend. Ultimately, the draft can lead to the huge wrecks and that can lead to a driver with a big price winning the race outright.
Here are a few matchups to consider for the YellaWood 500.
Chase Elliott -115 vs. Ryan Blaney -115
Over the last 7 races at Talladega, Chase Elliott has won 4 of the match ups versus Ryan Blaney who has won 3. Blaney missed the cut into the round of 12 in the 2020 playoffs and Chase is right smack in the middle of the round of 12. Blaney at first glance on paper would appear to be the better play, but looking deeper Chase been caught up in more wrecks at Talladega over the 7 race time span. 3 wins in a row at Talladega is hard to come by which is what Blaney is seeking, but Chase needs the victory more. Take Chase over Blaney in the YellaWood 500.
Jeff’s Pick Chase Elliott -115
Clint Bowyer -125 vs Erik Jones -106
Erik Jones has finished ahead of the Clint Bowyer 4 of the last 7 Cup Series races held at Talladega Super Speedway. Jones has 4 DNFs over the last 7 races at Talladega and Bowyer has 2. Jones has 3 top 10 finishes including 2 top 5s in the races that he didn’t get involved in the big wreck. Bowyer only has 2 top finishes with 1 top 5 in the same time span. Jones runs very well at Daytona and Talladega and I will take a shot on him against Clint Bowyer on Sunday.
Jeff’s Pick: Erik Jones -106
Ricky Stenhouse Jr. -115 vs. William Bryon -115
Stenhouse and Byron have gone 5 head to head match ups at Talladega and Stenhouse won 4 of the 5. Stenhouse excels at Daytona and Talladega because of his aggressive tendencies behind the wheel. Stenhouse has the 5th best average driver rating of 93.7 at Talladega over the last 7 races as well as an average finish of 10.14. Byron has an average driver rating of 81.5 over the last 5 at Talladega and an average finish of 22.8. Ricky has nothing to lose on Sunday, take him in the match up over William Byron.
Jeff’s Pick: Ricky Stenhouse Jr. -115
