The NASCAR Cup Series heads to Dover on Saturday for the Drydene 311. Dover is a steep, 1 mile oval that compares best to Bristol and slightly to Homestead. The fast groove around Dover is very narrow, so passing is a challenge. I will be referencing the last 4 races here at Dover, so let’s dig into the driver vs. driver matchups.
Here are a few matchups to consider for the Drydene 311.
Brad Keselowski -134 vs. Joey Logano 100
Brad has split this matchup with Logano 2 and 2 over the last 4 Cup Series races competed at Dover. Logano had an issue in the previous race at Dover in 2019 and finished 34th. Brad has the better driver rating of 92 and average finish of 15.17 over the last 6 at Dover. The matchup between Joey and Brad is more even than the price, so I am taking a shot on Joey on even money.
Jeff’s Pick Joey Logano 100
Kurt Busch -115 vs. Erik Jones -115
Kurt Busch and Erik Jones have split the last 4 races at Dover 2 and 2. Over the last 4 races, Kurt has 3 top 10s including 2 top 5 finishes at Dover. Erik has 2 top 10 finishes and only 1 top 5 finish at Dover in the same time span. Interestingly enough, Erik has a way better driver rating of 87.5 in the last 6 compared to Kurt at 81.4. I feel Erik has a lot more to prove right away since he will be seeking a ride at the end of the 2020 season.
Jeff’s Pick: Erik Jones -115
Clint Bowyer 100 vs. William Byron -134
Bowyer and Byron have gone 2-2 over the last 4 races held at Dover Downs. Bowyer has the 8th best average driver rating over the last 6 at Dover of 91.5. Byron is further down in average driver rating in the last 6 at 80.7. Clint has strung together 4 top 10 finishes at Dover while Byron only has 1 top finish. At even money, I am very interested in Clint Bowyer to win this matchup against William Byron.
Jeff’s Pick: Clint Bowyer 100
Aric Almirola -125 vs. Jimmie Johnson -106
Jimmie has won 3 out of 4 matchups against Almirola at Dover since 2018. Jimmie has arguably been the best active driver at Dover over his career, and this being his final season in Cup competition is looking for a win. Almirola has an average driver rating of 79.4 over the last 6, while Jimmie has an average driver of 91.6. Jimmie for sure needs a victory to secure a spot in the 2020 playoffs, and I feel as if he has his best chance to do so at Dover this weekend.
Jeff’s Pick: Jimmie Johnson -106
