The Nascar Xfinity Series makes way to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Saturday July 4th for the Pennzoil 150. Nascar decided to have the Pennzoil 150 on the road course at Indy for the first time in series competition. Since the Xfinity Series hasn’t competed on the road course at Indy, we will need to look back at recent road course events. We found victory lane last weekend at Pocono, and hopefully we can repeat at Indy on Saturday.
Here are a 5 drivers to consider for the Pennzoil 150.
Austin Cindric +140- Cindric was by far the best on road courses in the Xfinity back in 2019. Austin won at Watkins Glen and followed that victory up with a win at Mid Ohio road course. Cindric also finished 2nd at Road America in 2019 and finished 3rd at the Charlotte road course in 2019. The Pennzoil 150 will be the first Nascar race run on the Indy road course, and I feel Austin is a rightful favorite to win on Saturday afternoon.
A.J. Allmendinger +250- A.J. is a Cup veteran, and when he was on the Cup circuit, was always a threat when the series made stops at road courses. A.J. ran all 4 road course events in the Xfinity series in 2019, and he didn’t disappoint. A.J. won the 2019 Charlotte road course race. A.J. also had a 2nd place finish at Watkins Glen and finished 3rd at Mid Ohio in 2019. A.J. should be a popular pick on Saturday, but I do feel safe in his abilities to finish in the top 5 and possibly win on Saturday afternoon.
Justin Allgaier +650- Justin has been one of the best drivers on the Xfinity Series circuit for a few years now. Justin is in a JR Motorsports race car, and no doubt this is top of the line equipment. Justin has performed well at just about every track we visit on the Xfinity circuit. Justin had 2 top 5 finishes and 2 top finishes in the 4 road course races in the 2019 season. Justin is very good at managing the car through the race each week, and this should give him a shot at finishing top 5 on Saturday.
Noah Gragson +1600- Noah has been running very well here in the 2020 Xfinity Series. Gragson has won 2 races in the 2020 season, and we head to a type of track Noah has performed well on. In 2019, Gragson had 3 top 5 finishes and 1 top 10 finish in the 4 road course races. Gragson is an aggressive racer, and this really helped him go to victory at Bristol earlier in the season. Road course races take a certain degree of aggressiveness, and I feel Noah has what it takes to make it to victory lane at Indy.
Jeremy Clements +4500- Clements will be my long shot play for the Pennzoil 150 on Saturday. Clements’ team is a small operation, but this shouldn’t fool anyone. Clement’s and team won the 2017 race at Road America in Wisconsin. Clements finished 8th at Road America in 2019, and he finished 12th at Watkins Glen. Clements just missed top 10 finishes at Mid Ohio and the Charlotte road course finishing 11th in those races. I feel Clements is worth sprinkling a little action on Saturday afternoon for the Pennzoil 150.
