We head to the Talladega Super Speedway on Sunday afternoon for the Geico 500. Dega is the biggest track on the circuit at 2.6 miles, and has 33 degrees of banking in the turns. Talladega is known for the 3 and 4 wide racing, and of course the big wreck that can happen at any moment. Typically we see a handful of strategies play out thru the course of each race at Talladega, and I expect that to be no different come Sunday. We came close to finding victory lane at Homestead last week, and we need to get back on the winning train at Talladega.
Here are a 5 drivers to consider for the Geico 500.
Chase Elliott +850- Chase will begin Sunday’s GEICO 500 from a top 12 starting spot. Chase won the spring race at Talladega in 2019 and finished 8th in the 2019 fall race. Over the last 4 Talladega races, Chase does not have any DNFs, and the 4th best driver rating of 94.8. I will be shocked if Chase and the Hendrick cars do not try and run in the lead pack for the entire race on Sunday. As long as Chase doesn’t get in the big wreck, he will should be in contention for the win on Sunday Talladega.
Joey Logano +900- Logano has been the best among active drivers in the 4 races at Talladega with an average driver rating of 113.4. Joey has 3 top 5 finishes and an average finish of 5.25 in the last 4 races at Talladega, with zero DNFs. Joey has done a phenomenal job about avoiding the big wrecks here at Talladega over the years. Logano will begin the GEICO 500 from a top 12 starting spot. Joey likes to lead the pack here at Dega, and that should increase his chances of staying out of trouble.
Kurt Busch +1600- Kurt is 10 in owner points as of now, and will draw a starting spot in the top 12 for the GEICO 500. Over the last 4 races at Talladega, Kurt has the 2nd best average driver rating of 103.2. Also, Kurt has an average finish of 12.5 over the last 4 races, with 1 DNF. Kurt is a patient in the draft at the super speedways, so if he can avoid the big wreck, he will be in contention for the win.
Aric Amirola +2000- Aric has the 3rd best average driver rating over the last 4 Talladega races at 98.3, and has an average finish of 5.25. Talladega is probably the best shot this team has of capturing a victory, and an elusive playoff spot for the Chase later on this season. Aric will start the GEICO 500 between positions 13-24, and I think he will move the back and ride around for a good portion of the race. Amirola should make a move in the last 50 laps, and be in contention.
Ty Dillon +6600- Ty is a huge longshot for me at Talladega on Sunday for the GEICO 500. Ty is 29th in owner points, so he will start towards the back on Sunday. Much like Amirola, I think Ty will sit back for a majority of GEICO 500 on Sunday, and then with about 50 laps to go start making moves towards the front pack. Ty has been in contention many times at Talladega, but the big wreck has bitten him a few times. I will have a little action on Ty Sunday as his sponsor GEICO is also sponsoring the race.
