We make our way to Bristol Motor Speedway on Sunday afternoon for the first short track race on the NASCAR schedule of 2020. Bristol is 15 minutes from where I live, and it’s disappointing I will not be able to attend the Food City 500 Sunday. Bristol is no doubt a fan favorite, as racing is bumper to bumper. We went 2 and 2 back on Thursday evening at Charlotte for -.28 unit, and on the year we are still up 1.5 units on match ups.
Here are a few matchups to consider for the Food City 500 on Sunday.
Jimmie Johnson -125 vs. Erik Jones -106
Jimmie has won this match up 3-1 over the last 4 Bristol races against Erik. Bristol is one of Erik’s best tracks, but as of recent issues have plagued some of his performances. Erik starts 15th on Sunday, while Jimmie will start 24th. Erik definitely has the upper hand on track position, and I like Erik’s current form more than I like Johnson’s recent form.
Jeff’s Pick: Erik Jones -106
Ricky Stenhouse Jr. -118 vs. Ryan Newman -112
Newman has gone 3-1 against Stenhouse in the last 4 races at Bristol. Stenhouse is one of the best when it comes to racing at Bristol, but his results do not show this. Stenhouse has had issues in a lot of races at Bristol, and Newman has been better at avoiding trouble. Newman has the better driver rating of 81.3 compared to 70 for Stenhouse over the last 4 Bristol races. Give me Newman to win this match up.
Jeff’s Pick: Ryan Newman -112
Joey Logano -112 vs. Denny Hamlin-118
Joey has won 3 of the last 4 races against Denny in the last 4 races at Bristol. Denny of course won the most previous race at Bristol back in August of 2019, and I think that is over shadowing Denny’s price. Logano has the better driver rating of 104.5 compared to Denny’s rating of 93.3 in the last 4 Bristol races. Logano will start 3rd on Sunday, and this track position is a big advantage at Bristol.
Jeff’s Pick: Joey Logano-112
Ryan Blaney -139 vs. Kurt Busch +105
Kurt has won 3 of the last 4 against Ryan in this matchup at Bristol. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw Kurt was plus 105 against Blaney in this matchup. Blaney has the 5th best quality passing percentage in the last 2 races here at Bristol, but mid race issues have been brutal for Blaney. Kurt has been great here at Bristol over the years like his brother Kyle. I feel Kurt will prevail on Sunday, but Blaney won’t be far behind.
Jeff’s Pick: Kurt Busch +105
