After a busy week in Darlington, we head to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the Coke 600. As one of the crown jewels of NASCAR, the Coke 600 is longest race on the Nascar Cup Series schedule. Attrition is the name of the game at the Coke 600, and we will see who will overcome the late race obstacles. We made it to victory lane in both races at Darlington, let’s keep that momentum going for the Coke 600
Here are a 5 drivers to consider for the Coca Cola 600.
Kyle Busch +400- Kyle is the outright favorite for the Coke 600, and I think the momentum is starting to pick up. The incident with Chase at Darlington on Wednesday night could play on the minds of a lot people, but not me. We move on from it, and look at how Kyle has best average driver rating of 140.6 over the last 2 Coke 600s. Kyle smoked the field in 2018, leading 377 of the 400 laps on the way to a victory. Kyle finished 3rd in the 2019 Coke 600, and baring any issues will be in contention Sunday evening.
Martin Truex Jr. +600- Truex and team have found a stride since we have returned racing. No better time than now to head to Charlotte this weekend for Martin. Truex has the 2nd best driver rating over the last 2 Coke 600s of 126.5, 2nd only to Kyle Busch. Truex won the Coke 600 last year in 2019, and I have full confidence he can repeat.
Chase Elliott + 900- Chase has been phenomenal this year in green flag speed at each track we have visited. However, we know Chase has experienced some of the worst fortune, and I feel he can only positively regress. Over the past 2 Coke 600s, Chase has and average finish of 7.5 and a driver rating of 100.4 that is 4th best. I am not worried about Chase retaliating against Kyle Busch this weekend, and consider Chase a fine play this weekend.
Alex Bowman +900- Bowman continues to roll along this season, carrying the 3rd best driver average over the last 6 races of 105.9. Looking at the last 2 Coke 600s, Bowman has 2 top finishes and a driver rating of 91.7. Bowman had the 2nd best green flag speed in the first Darlington race back last Sunday, as well as the 6th best green flag speed at Las Vegas before the break. Bowman has a top 10 car, and look for him to contend at Charlotte Sunday evening.
Jimmie Johnson +1600- Jimmie is my dark horse play for the Coke 600 this weekend. A few years ago, Jimmie was the favorite, but hey times change. This will be the final Coke 600 for Jimmie, and I suspect he will be in contention. Over the last 2 Coca Cola 600s, Jimmie has been successful with an average finish of 6.5. Jimmie also has the 6th best driver rating at 97.6 over the last 2 Coke 600s. Like the other Hendrick Motorsports teammates, Jimmie has been fast this year. Unless Jimmie’s team complete misses the set up on this 48 machine Sunday, I don’t see any reason Jimmie cant’ at least finish top 5. I will sprinkle some action here on Jimmie.
