Israel Adesanya and Robert Whittaker face off on Saturday in the main event of UFC 271 for the Middleweight Champion at the Toyota Center in Houston Texas.
These two faced off in 2019 for the belt and in the second round, Adesanya won by knockout. In that fight Adesanya had two knockdowns and outstruck Whittaker 40-32.
Israel “The Last Stylebender” Adesanya comes into this fight with a 21-1 record overall and he is coming into this fight with a victory over Marvin Vettori. In that fight in June of 2021, he outstruck Vettori 96-58 and that led to the unanimous decision victory. The Last Stylebender was taken down four times, but there was still very little doubt that he came away with a victory. The one loss came two fights ago against Jan Blachowicz and he was oustruck 107-78 in that fight. Adesanya is averaging 3.94 significant strikes per minute while absorbing 2.59 significant strikes per minute. Adesanya is going to do everything in his power to keep the fight on the feet and he is stopping 80 percent of his opponents takedown attempts.
On the other side of this matchup is Robert Whittaker who has a 24-5 record and he has won three fights in a row. Whittaker’s last fight came against Kelvin Gastelum and it was one of his more dominant performances that didn’t end in a knockout. Whittaker outstruck Gastelum 150-62 and also had four takedowns. Each of the last three wins by Whittaker have been by unanimous decision. He is averaging 4.68 significant strikes per minute while absorbing 3.34 significant strikes per minute. Whittaker is averaging 0.64 takedowns every 15 minutes but he is only successful on 34 percent of his takedown attempts. In this fight, Whittaker needs to inflict the damage early, and he needs to try and avoid the power of Adesanya.
Adesanya finished the last fight by knockout against Whittaker and he is going to do it again in this fight. Adesanya is the more talented fighter, and he is going to wear down Whittaker as the fight goes on. Whittaker still doesn’t have the chin, and Adesanya is going to win this fight by knockout.
