Rose Namajunas and Zhang Weili face off on Saturday in the co-main event of UFC 268 in a women’s strawweight title bout at Madison Square Garden.
These two just faced off in April, and it was Namajunas that came away with the victory. It was just over a minute into the fight that she landed the big kick to finish the knockout. Rose was actually being outstruck 7-5 when the fight was finished.
Rose “Thug” Namajunas comes into this fight with an 11-4 record and she has won five of her last six fights. Two fights ago against Jessica Andrade it was a tough battle, but she won by split decision. Namajunas is averaging 4.13 significant strikes per minute while absorbing 3.99 significant strikes per minute. She does a good job of getting the fight to the ground, averaging 1.89 takedowns every 15 minutes, and she is successful on 53 percent of her attempts. She also stops 50 percent of her opponent's takedown attempts.
On the other side of this matchup is Zhang Weili who sits with a 21-2 record overall and she had won five fights in a row before losing her last fight against Namaunas. Weili can inflict a lot of damage and is averaging 6.36 significant strikes per minute while absorbing 4.42 significant strikes per minute. She is also averaging 1.24 takedowns every 15 minutes, but she is only successful on 23 percent of her takedown attempts. She also is averaging 0.5 submission attempts every 15 minutes, and one of her wins inside the UFC was by armbar.
Namajunas won the first fight against Weili, but that won’t be the case again in this one. I expect Weili is going to come in with a different game plan and she is going to inflict a ton of damage early. Back Weili to win this fight at a nice price.
