Israel Adesanya and Marvin Vettori face off on Saturday in the main event for the middleweight bout at the Gila River Arena in Glendale Arizona.
This is the second time that these two teams have faced off. Adesanya beat Vettori back in April of 2018 by a split decision. Adesanya was taken down twice in that fight, but he outstruck Vettori 57-46 and that led to the victory.
Adesanya comes into this fight with a 20-1 record overall but that one loss did come in his last fight against Jan Blachowicz. Each of the four previous wins by Adesanya were for the title. Adesanya is averaging 3.95 significant strikes per minute while absorbing 2.63 significant strikes per minute. Adesanya wants to keep the fight on the feet and he is averaging 0.00 takedowns every 15 minutes He also is stopping 82 percent of his takedown attempts. Adesanya is averaging 0.3 submission attempts every 15 minutes.
On the other side of this matchup is Marvin Vettori who is trying to get some revenge in this fight and coming into this one he sits with a 17-4-1 record. If Vettori comes away with a victory in this fight, he will be the first Italian champion in the UFC. Vettori has won five fights in a row and four of those wins came by unanimous decision. Vettori’s last fight came against Kevin Holland in April of 2021 Vettori is averaging 4.14 significant strikes per minute while absorbing 2.90 significant strikes per minute. Vettori likes to get the fight to the ground and is averaging 2.12 takedowns every 15 minutes and he is successful on 53 percent of them. If Vettori wants to win this fight he needs to be the more aggressive fighter early, and make a statement early.
Adesanya won the first fight and he has only gotten better since that last night. I think Vettori will force a decision, but Adesanya is going to have no issue getting the job done. Back Adesanya to win this fight by decision.
