Tigers Scoring has Been Bad
The Detroit Tigers are 21-22 this season and they have lost nine of their last 12 games. Detroit is coming off of a series loss against the Marlins, where they lost two out of three games and were shutout in games two and three. Prior to that series, the Tigers lost two out of three against Houston, lost two out of three against Cleveland, and were swept by the Yankees. Despite the poor offense, the Tigers started the season with a solid record, but they have dropped to fourth in the AL Central behind the Guardians, Royals, and Twins.
The Detroit pitching staff has a 3.33 ERA, a 1.13 WHIP, and a .224 opponent batting average. The Tigers offense has scored 168 runs with a .225 batting average and a .297 on base percentage. Riley Greene is batting .239 with nine home runs and 19 RBI’s for the Tigers this season. Detroit has had a very good pitching staff to start the season, but the offense has really let them down. The Tigers have scored two runs or fewer in six of their last 12 games.
Diamondbacks Starting to Play Better
The Arizona Diamondbacks are 21-23 this year and they have won seven of their last ten games. Arizona is coming off of a series win against Cincinnati, where they won two out of three games, despite being out scored 12-10 in the series. Prior to that series win, the Diamondbacks lost two out of three against Baltimore, swept the Reds, and lost two out of three against San Diego. Arizona has been inconsistent, especially offensively, so far this season and they are already pretty far back of the Dodgers in the NL West.
The Arizona pitching staff has a 4.21 ERA, a 1.30 WHIP, and a .252 opponent batting average. The Diamondbacks offense has scored 215 runs with a .245 batting average and a .322 on base percentage. Ketel Marte is batting .289 with nine home runs and 24 RBI’s for the Diamondbacks this season. Arizona has scored at least four runs in seven of their last ten games.
Starting Pitchers
The projected starting pitcher for Detroit is Tarik Skubal, who is 5-0 with a 2.02 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP over 49.0 innings pitched this year. Skubal has allowed two earned runs or fewer in five straight starts, but the Tigers are just 3-2 in those five games. The projected starting pitcher for Arizona is Ryne Nelson, who is 2-2 with a 5.33 ERA and a 1.70 WHIP over 25.1 innings pitched this season. Nelson has allowed seven earned runs and 18 hits over his last two starts against Baltimore and San Diego (9.2 IP).

Detroit Tigers vs Arizona Diamondbacks Prediction
Detroit comes into this game looking for some offense, as they have not scored a run in their last two games. The Tigers have absolutely wasted some great pitching to start the season, as their offense is one of the worst in the MLB. Arizona has been slightly inconsistent on offense, but they can put up runs in a hurry with that lineup. Nelson will be starting for Arizona, but has been rocked in his last two outings. Skubal is going for Detroit, who is very good, but can the offense give him support? I am going to take a chance with the Tigers offense in this game, as I really think Skubal is a top pitcher in the AL. My Detroit Tigers vs Arizona Diamondbacks prediction is for the Tigers to win game one of the series.
