St. Louis Cardinals Betting Preview

Over the weekend, the Cardinals took on the New York Mets. St. Louis did well in the first two games of that set, bagging wins 4-2 and 7-4. On Sunday the Cardinals gave up three runs in the bottom of the 11th inning on the way to a tough loss 4-2. Lance Lynn had a solid start though, going 5.0 innings with one earned on five hits and three walks.

In the starting pitcher slot for the Monday opener, the Cardinals are going with Steven Matz. This year over his five starts Matz is 1-2 with a 5.55 ERA and 16 Ks in 24.1 innings. Matz is 55-60 with a 4.28 career ERA in 186 games (168 starts).

Detroit Tigers Betting Preview

Over on the Tigers’ side, they played the Kansas City Royals over the weekend. Detroit split the first pair 8-0 (loss) and 6-5 (win). In the Sunday rubber match the Tigers bagged 10 team hits along the way to a 4-1 victory. Tarik Skubal was great on 7.0 innings, four hits, one walk, one earned and six strikeouts in the starting pitcher role.

As starting pitcher for Monday’s matchup, the Tigers are going with Kenta Maeda. This year in five starts Maeda is 0-1 with a 5.96 ERA and 17 strikeouts over 22.2 innings. Maeda has a career record of 65-50 with a 3.97 ERA in 195 games (160 starts).

St. Louis Cardinals vs Detroit Tigers Prediction

I’ll probably try the Tigers in this one. At least some of that is due to Matz’s recent struggles. He was solid on April 12 versus the Diamondbacks with 4.2 innings and one earned on eight hits. In the two starts since then however, Matz has given up 12 earned runs on 13 hits and six walks in 9.1 combined innings. He’s 0-2 in that pair.

On Sunday in their weekend series finale, Detroit got a pretty well-rounded effort from the whole team. After Skubal exited, the bullpen came through with 2.0 innings, no earned, one hit, one walk and three strikeouts. Every batter except for Colt Keith (0-for-4) had at least one hit, while both Jake Rogers (two runs) and Wenceel Perez (two RBI) had home runs. I like Detroit to keep that momentum going into the early-week series.
